    Abstract: An air retaining and bead-seat-lock device for pneumatic tire wheels is provided having air retaining engagement with an aperture in a tire rim adjacent the seated tire bead, and having two positions of operative engagement with the rim, one position disposing the inner end of the device substantially flush with the inner rim surface facilitating air-pressure seating of the tire bead against the rim flange, and the other position disposing an end to protrude beyond the inner rim surface adjacent the tire bead to support the same in seating engagement with the rim flange. In its simplest form the device comprises an elongated threaded shank closely fitting a threaded aperture in the rim and having an enlarged head externally of the rim adapted for clamping an air sealing gasket against the rim, and being movable between the first and second positions by rotating the threaded shank to appropriately position its inner end. In another adaptation of the invention the device is intended for reversible positioning with respect to the rim and is provided with a central wrench engaging enlargement with threaded studs at each side thereof of a length to extend through a sealing gasket and the rim wall, with the stud at one side having an unthreaded extension adapted to protrude at least 1/2" beyond the inner rim surface. In a preferred adaptation of the invention, the device comprises an axially movable cylindrical shank passing through an externally threaded stud secured outwardly of the tire rim in alignment with the aperture therein, said stud carrying clamping means for a packing element circumferentially of said shank for air sealing and axial positioning of said shank.The device is used in pairs, axially aligned on the rim adjacent the opposed rim flanges with two or more pairs being employed at uniformly spaced intervals circumferentially of the rim.

    Abstract: A unitary run-flat insert for inflatable tires is provided in the form of a split ring having sufficient flexibility, through separation at the split portion thereof, to pass over the rim flanges of a tire mounting rim and having an inner periphery closely and circumferentially engaging the rim when the split portion is closed, with lock means at said split portion adapted for automatic engagement as the ends forming said split portion are moved into juxtapositioned alignment. As closed by the lock means, the insert engages the rim in a manner to rotate therewith in normal operation, but to slip circumferentially thereof when riding on a deflated tire. The flexibility required can be provided by fashioning the insert from material having sufficient deformability to permit flexing of the full cross-section of the insert or, when less deformable material is needed for load bearing purposes, the insert can be provided with a plurality of slits, circumferentially spaced and extending part way through the radial dimension. The unitary insert can have a substantial radial dimension when intended for load bearing under run-flat conditions, or can have a smaller, non-load bearing radial dimension when intended primarily to maintain bead-seating between the tire and rim under run-flat conditions, thereby facilitating the use of standard, one-piece drop center wheels with tires especially designed for "run-flat operation", and which provide their own load bearing support when running flat.

    Abstract: A unitary, essentially cylindrical, rigid closed ring member is provided for use with pneumatic tires having spaced mounting beads at the inner diameter for engagement with edge flanges of a circumferentially divided two-part wheel rim, the wheel rim providing an essentially flat central bearing surface joining the flanges in bead receiving portions which may be angled 5.degree. or 15.degree. from the horizontal; the ring member having an outside diameter approximately 5/8" greater than the inside diameter of the tire beads, an edge thickness of about 1/4" for engagement with inner surfaces of the tire beads, and a width such as to firmly support the tire beads in engagement with the rim flanges when the wheel is fully assembled, the central portion of the ring having a smooth inner surface for close engagement with the bearing surface of the wheel, and the outer surface of the ring having a central annular depression track about 1/4" deep, and of a width to freely and rotatably receive a run-flat support ring comprising a plurality of arcuate members assembled in end-to-end relation.

    Abstract: A run-flat insert or safety roller for inflatable tires comprising a plurality of arcuate members which, when clamped in end to end relation circumferentially envelop the wheel or rim in a manner to rotate therewith in normal operation but to slip circumferentially thereof when riding on a deflated tire, is provided with circumferentially engageable lock means permitting partial assemblage of the insert within a tire in advance of mounting the tire on a wheel or rim and completion of said insert assemblage, to circumferentially envelop said wheel or rim, by application of radially opposed forces to outer surfaces of the mounted but uninflated tire.The circumferentially engageable lock means enables the run-flat insert to be clamped to the rim by novel procedures compatible with existing automatic tire mounting equipment of automotive assembly lines. Strategically located apertures adjacent ends of the arcuate members, and receiving leverage members extending perpendicularly to the plane of the arcuate members permit the tire bead to be pried to the side, thereby providing access to the joint, to provide manual closing of said lock means when desired.
