摘要:
A method and system control the flight height of a transducer element of a slider mechanism operating in association with a storage disk. The invention adjusts the flight height of transducer element to a first flight height using an electromechanical control mechanism. The flight height of transducer element then achieves a second flight height using a thermal control mechanism. The thermal control mechanism is associated with a thermally responsive portion of transducer element. By heating the thermally responsive portion, a portion of transducer element becomes sufficiently proximate to the storage disk for the transducer element to respond to physical forces arising from electrostatic induction between transducer element and the storage disk. Flight height adjustment of transducer element from the second flight height to a third flight height may then occur using an electrostatic control mechanism which generates a physical force through electrostatic induction.

A method for manufacturing a first disk drive includes incorporating a first storage disk having a first storage surface, and a first slider having a first read/write head and a slider mover into the first disk drive. Further, the first read/write head is movably positioned a first head-to-disk spacing relative to the first storage surface. The method also includes determining an incremental power level necessary to be delivered to a second slider mover of a second slider having a second read/write head to adjust a second head-to-disk spacing relative to a second storage surface by a predetermined increment. In addition, the method includes adjusting a first head-to-disk spacing by directing an operational power level to the first slider mover. The operational power level is derived from the incremental power level. The step of determining an incremental power level can include directing power to the second slider mover and detecting approximately when a portion of the second slider first contacts the second storage surface. Moreover, the step of adjusting can be performed during one or more manufacturing operations of the first disk drive.

A method for monitoring the operability of a slider of a disk drive includes the steps of providing a slider that includes a read/write head that magnetically interacts with a storage disk, and a slider mover that adjusts a head-to-disk spacing, controlling an electrical stimulus to the slider mover with a drive circuitry, measuring an actual electrical response from the slider mover with the drive circuitry, and comparing the actual electrical response to an expected electrical response to determine an operability status of the slider mover. Further, changes in the actual electrical response can be monitored and used to predict future failure of the slider mover.

Hard disk drive housing including at least one inlet, at least one outlet. The inlet is situated near spindle and above disk in hard disk drive. The outlet is situated near outside diameter of disk. When disk rotates, air pressure near the inlet is lower than air pressure near the outlet, causing a flow of air through the hard disk drive from the inlet to the outlet, tending to cool the hard disk drive. The inlet may include inlet filter. Outlet may include outlet filter. Manufacturing the housing by providing the inlet and the outlet. The disk cover as manufacturing product. Operating the hard disk drive containing the housing. The hard disk drive containing the housing, and manufacturing the hard disk drive. The hard disk drive as manufacturing product. A system containing at least one of the hard disk drives. Manufacturing the system, and the system as a manufacturing product.

A disk drive includes a drive housing, a storage disk, a slider and a drive circuitry. The storage disk has an inner and an outer diameter. The slider includes a read/write head and a slider mover that receives power from the drive circuitry to position the read/write head at a predetermined head-to-disk spacing during radial movement of the slider relative to the storage disk. The drive circuitry can direct a varying level of power to the slider mover during radial movement of the slider. In addition, the drive circuitry can increase the power to the slider mover as the read/write head nears a target track in order to decrease the head-to-disk spacing at the appropriate time. The drive circuitry can adjust the power to the slider mover so that the head-to-disk spacing remains within a predetermined range as the slider moves radially relative to the storage disk. The drive circuitry can also direct power to the slider mover so that the head-to-disk spacing is substantially the same at the start of a seek operation and when the read/write head arrives at a target track. The drive circuitry can also direct power to the slider mover based at least partially on the temperature of a portion of the slider.

A disk drive includes a storage disk, a suspension and a slider assembly. The slider assembly includes a trailing half having a surface area, and a leading half having a substantially similar surface area to that of the trailing half. The percentage of the surface area of the trailing half that is directly secured to the suspension is greater than the percentage of the surface area of the leading half that is directly secured to the suspension. In another embodiment, the slider assembly includes a top surface that is secured to the suspension so that during an increase in temperature of the suspension only a portion of the top surface is subjected to a force that causes concavity of the slider assembly along a crown and/or a cross-crown direction. In yet another embodiment, the slider assembly is secured to the suspension so that a portion of the slider assembly cantilevers away from the suspension. In a further embodiment, the slider assembly has a leading edge and an opposing trailing edge. In this embodiment, the slider assembly is secured to the suspension so that an increase in temperature of the suspension causes more cross-crown concavity relative to the storage disk at the trailing edge than at the leading edge.

A hard disk drive with a controller that controls a movement of a head relative to a disk. The controller causes the head to avoid a defect on the disk during a seek routine. The location of the defect is previously identified and stored in the drive. The drive may create a “no-fly” zone about the defect to insure no contact with the head. The no-fly zone can be avoided by delaying the start of a seek routine, varying the displacement profile of the head or other techniques.

The invention is generally directed to a disk drive head resetting system. The system has a slider with a disk drive head associated therewith. The disk drive head may be on the slider and affixed thereto. A heater is also associated with a slider and spaced apart from the disk drive head. A controller is communicatively coupled to the heater and to the head to transfer a first control signal to the heater and a second control signal to the disk drive head at substantially the same time. The first control signal may be used to generate heat past a blocking temperature of the head to substantially free a magnetic orientation of the head. While the first control signal is being transferred to the heater, a second control signal is transferred to the disk drive head to align a magnetic orientation of the head to a desired magnetic orientation.

A disk drive having a drive housing, a storage disk that is rotatably coupled to the drive housing, and a slider assembly that includes a head and a slider mover. The head reads data from the storage disk during a read operation and writes data to the storage disk during a write operation. The slider mover maintains the head at a read HtD spacing during the read operation, at a pre-write HtD spacing during the read operation prior to the write operation, at a write HtD spacing during the write operation, and at an idle HtD spacing when the drive is not performing the read operation or the write operation. The disk drive includes a drive circuitry that directs a read power level to the slider mover to maintain the head at the read HtD spacing, a pre-write power level to maintain the head at the pre-write HtD spacing, a write power level to maintain the head at the write HtD spacing, and a idle power level to maintains the head at the idle HtD spacing.

A disk drive includes a drive housing, a storage disk, a slider and a drive circuitry. The slider magnetically interacts with the storage disk, and includes a read/write head that is positioned to have an actual head-to-disk spacing greater than zero nanometers during rotation of the storage disk. The drive circuitry can determine and/or monitor the actual head-to-disk spacing at any time during the operation of the disk drive based on an amplitude or a change in the amplitude of a signal such as a variable gain amplifier signal. In one embodiment, the slider includes a slider mover that receives current via the drive circuitry and causes a deformation of a portion of the slider to change the head-to-disk spacing based on the amplitude of the signal. In another embodiment, the read/write head moves during substantially consistent rotational velocity of the storage disk from a first actual head-to-disk spacing equal to approximately zero nanometers, to a second actual head-to-disk spacing that is greater than zero nanometers based on a desired amplitude of the signal.
