Marangoni flow induced print defects are alleviated by underprinting and/or overprinting by a primary ink-jet ink with at least one treating solution that is capable of inducing the precipitation of the colorant in the primary ink-jet ink upon sustained contact. Since the time scale of precipitation is fast compared with the development of print defects due to Marangoni flow, the deleterious effects of Marangoni flow are forestalled. The method of the invention offers an effective and easily-implemented solution to the problem of Marangoni flow induced print defects that supplants the use of specially-treated paper and its associated high cost and inconvenience.

A dimensionally stable plastic canning ring for securing vacuum sealing lids to food containers during processing, is fabricated of thermoplastic material reinforced with fibers. The fibers are circumferentially aligned in the plastic media whereby the canning ring exhibits thermal expansion which is lowest in the direction of fiber alignment, i.e., circumferentially. The circumferential thermal coefficient of expansion substantially matches that of a glass container with which the canning ring is utilized. Due to the similarity of thermal coefficients of expansion, relative dimensional differences between the plastic ring and the glass container occurring during processing are negligible. The ring is manufactured by an injection molding process. The mold cavity includes a single gate disposed generally adjacent its periphery. Injection of the plastic and fiber material into the mold through the single gate causes laminar circumferential flow about the mold cavity and alignment of the fibers with the circumferential flow streamlines.

A resilient hinge arrangement has a first hinge part and a second hinge part that assumes a plurality of stable pivoting positions with respect to the first hinge part, with a dead center lying at least between two of the stable pivoting positions. The second hinge part is arranged to return from pivoting positions between the two stable pivoting positions through the dead center, outside a dead center itself, in an elastically resilient manner into a nearest one of the stable pivoting positions. Two connecting arms are spaced a distance apart and include at least one coupling element protruding movably from each of the first and second hinge parts, and at least one substantially flexurally rigid intermediate part between the coupling elements that is delimited by two bending regions that are spaced apart and arranged at an angle to each other between the intermediate part and the coupling elements. Each of the two connecting arms is substantially stress free in an opened position and a closed position of the first hinge part relative to the second hinge part at a point at which the bending regions come closest to each other. Each coupling element is arranged to execute a maximum elastic relieving movement in a region of the dead center upon pivoting movement of the second hinge part with respect to the first hinge part between the two stable pivoting positions through the dead center.
