Abstract: 5,6-Dihydroxyindole is prepared by the catalytic reductive cyclization of 4,5-dihydroxy-2,.beta.-dinitrostyrene in a single step using hydrogen with a palladium, platinum or rhodium catalyst in a polar hydroxylic reaction system. No reaction byproducts or only a single reaction byproduct are produced. The 4,5-dihydroxy-2,.beta.-dinitrostyrene intermediate can be prepared by the chemoselective debenzylation of 4,5-dibenzyloxy-2,.beta.-dinitrostyrene using trifluoroacetic acid. 5,6-Dihydroxyindole is a useful component in hair dye formulations and as an intermediate in the synthesis of melanin.

Abstract: Aqueous compositions containing about 0.5-10% of at least one salt of a fatty acid amide of an amino acid, and about 0.05-0.2% of a salt of an acrylates/C10-30 alkyl acrylate crosspolymer, or about 0.1-0.75% of a salt of acrylates copolymer, are clear, foamable and ultra-mild on skin. Abstract: A hair dyeing process which comprises of steps of contacting the hair to be dyed with an aqueous solution of a metal salt that promotes melanogenses in air. Before or after the aforementioned step contacting the hair with a solution of 5,6-dihydroxyindole, rinsing the hair between the two contacting steps, maintaining the contact with the second-used solution until a desired darker color is obtained, rinsing or shampooing the hair, then contacting the hair with a solution of hydrogen peroxide until the desired color shade is obtained, and then again rinsing the hair.
