Abstract:
An adaptable wheel has a central hub, radial segments connected to the central hub at a proximal end and extending radially from the central hub, each radial segment having a linear actuator configured to change a length of the radial segment; a shoe connected to a distal end of the radial segment for contacting a surface being traversed by the wheel; and a locking mechanism for selectively preventing linear motion of the linear actuator. A control system for an adaptable wheel includes a distance sensor on a vehicle for determining distance to a surface in the path of the vehicle and a computer for receiving distance information from the distance sensor and, responsive to the distance information, determine a desired length of a segment of an adaptable wheel for maintaining a hub of a wheel level, and provide control signals to a linear actuator of the segment.

A communications system (FIG. 7) couples together a number of entities or communications devices 710 by means of alternating stages (722, 726) of crossbar switches (712, 716) and stages (724, 728) of stride extender coupler circuits, which are preferably in the form of modules (714, 718), together with a final stage (730) of cross-connecting "termination" circuits or modules (720). The system can be expanded in performance capability (FIG. 8) by adding further stages (822, 828) of crossbar switches and stride extender coupling circuits or modules.

Abstract:
A switched inerconnection system for interconnecting the data input and output ports of a plurality of individual data processors, terminals, sensors, robots or the like of a parallel data processing system includes a plurality of identical modules and custom interconnections. Each module includes on-board interconnections between input and output ports for providing interconnections among the processors coupled to that module, for thereby reducing the number of customized interconnections between modules.
