摘要: Disclosed systems and methods preferably capture one or more images of an item bearing an optical code and analyze such images to determine whether the item has a highly, or relatively highly, reflective surface or not. Based on such a determination, operating parameters of the system, such as the gain, exposure time, and amount of illumination, are preferably automatically adjusted by the system to capture a subsequent image of the item where the subsequent image has sufficient contrast to decode the optical code. The subsequent image may include a plurality of images, and different operating parameters may be used to capture several, or each, of the plurality of images based on the determination of whether the item has a highly, or relatively highly, reflective surface or not.

摘要: A scanner system and method for improving capture rate of reading labels with add-ons without sacrificing throughput with respect to non-add-on labels, the scanner including a mode in which the scanner in conjunction with the host (point-of-sale terminal) “learns” over time which base label codes will have associated add-ons. As the scanner successfully reads both a base label and its add-on data, the base label data is stored in a list in the scanner's memory. The required number of reads of base label or the timeout timer value may be adjusted based upon whether add-ons are expected or not corresponding to future scans of a base label corresponding to that of one in the list store. Base label statistics on successful base label and associated add-on reads, as well as ordering and selective storage of base label information based on frequency of base label occurrence may also be provided.

摘要: An apparatus and method for monitoring and reporting optical symbol readability and operator and reader performance levels. The apparatus includes a reader for optical symbols which measures and reports the values of measurements with respect to the symbol and events occurring during the reading process indicative of the label readability. The apparatus further comprises data accumulation device including a memory storage to accumulate these measurement values for each set of labels, and a programmed computing system to analyze the measured values and report on the results of the analysis. A preferred method of monitoring and reporting optical symbol readability and operator and reader performance levels includes the steps of reading or attempting to read an optical symbol, performing measurements within the symbol and noting events during the reading process, accumulating these values, analyzing the accumulated data, and producing a report which lists the sets of labels which had readability problems. The method also includes the optional step of listing the reading devices and reader operators which had more problems in reading symbols than expected.

摘要: In an optical scanning system, a method and apparatus for decoding labels of single or multiple block formats by stitching together partial label segments obtained from multiple optical scans across the label is provided. Partial scans are decoded into strings of character information which are assembled by locating sub-strings of common elements between two strings. Strings in which the common elements occur at the ends are merged by deleting one set of redundant common characters and joining the remaining characters in proper sequence. The method assembles strings in which the common elements occur in the middle of one or both strings by testing for valid string combinations made by deleting characters adjacent to the common sub-string, on opposing ends of each string, and merging the resulting strings. Feature characters, parity information, checksum digits, and other label structural characteristics are used to verify resulting strings and completed blocks and labels. Processing continues until all string combinations are tested and/or a complete label is formed.

摘要: A system for control of a bar code scanner threshold with deliberate decay includes monitoring a selected scan signal characteristic of characteristics and electronically determining whether sets of signal characteristics represent a bar code or extraneous noise, and, if noise is indicated, raising the black/white threshold until noise is no longer detected. The monitored characteristics can include frequency of perceived black/white transition. In a preferred embodiment, the raw scan signal is processed through two circuits, a first circuit wherein a threshold is generated based on the signal and a selected threshold criterion, and a second circuit wherein the threshold generated in the first circuit is applied to the signal to produce a bar signal output, which output is then monitored by a noise recognition device. If noise is perceived by the noise recognition device, a threshold offset signal is generated. The threshold generated in the first circuit is raised by adding to it the threshold offset signal. Then the raised threshold is fed through a threshold detection device in a third circuit which also receives the scan signal, to produce an output bar signal which substantially excludes noise readings. In this way, although the threshold will decay to accommodate changing conditions, it will be raised as necessary if it goes so low as to start reading noise.

摘要: An system and method for tallying objects presented for purchase preferably images the objects with a machine vision system while the objects are still, or substantially still. Images of the objects may be used to recognize the objects and to collect information about each object, such as the price. A pre-tally list may be generated and displayed to a customer showing the customer the cost of the recognized objects. A prompt on a customer display may be given to urge a customer to re-orient unrecognized objects to assist the machine vision system with recognizing such unrecognized objects. A tallying event, such as removing a recognized object from the machine vision system's field of view, preferably automatically tallies recognized objects so it is not necessary for a cashier to scan or otherwise input object information into a point of sale system.

摘要: An optical code reader includes a color image sensor array having first and second sets of pixels arranged along multiple parallel axes of a first axes group and multiple parallel axes of a second axes group transverse to the first axes group. The pixels of the first set produce data representing sensed light intensity values. In one configuration, the optical code reader includes a single-axis interpolator to produce interpolated intensity values that correspond to selected locations of pixels of the second set. The single-axis interpolator is operable to produce an interpolated intensity value for a selected location by using only intensity values sensed by pixels of the first set that share an axis of the first axes group with the selected location.

摘要: A scanner or other data reader is equipped with means for determining characteristics of an operator's scanning technique. In a preferred configuration, the scanner is integrated with a weigh scale for obtaining a dynamic weight of an item as the item is moved across the weigh scale. Weight data produced by the scanning/weighing process includes information about the amount of lifting the operator performs on scanned items, the rate of scanning by the operator, and rescanning information. The scanner may be connected to a PC-based training system which uses the scanning technique information to provide feedback to the operator indicating the effectiveness of the operator's scanning technique, and may also provide information to management for analysis. The technique information may be collected by a store controller or other suitable collection device for later analysis and reporting.
