    摘要: Disclosed drilling systems offer multiple methods providing access to the open borehole without first tripping the drill string. In some embodiments, a drill bit has a tool port that is blocked by a plug during normal drilling operations. When a tool is deployed through the interior of the drill string, the tool port opens, enabling the tool to enter the borehole beneath the drill string and perform logging or sampling operations. The plug may be attached to the drill bit by a hinge or pivot, or alternatively, the plug may be discarded and a replacement seated in place after the tool is retracted into the drill string. In other embodiments, the drill bit itself is detachable, allowing the bit to be parked in the hole or in a side bore. If desired, the bit can be re-attached by lowering the drill string to the bottom of the hole.

    摘要: A method of design and implementation of trellis codes for intersymbol interference channels is provided wherein a set of input vectors is mapped to a set of output vectors comprising the steps of forming a minimized basis having a set of minimized basis vectors configured for a set of channel output signals corresponding to the set of output vectors; selecting the smallest member of the set of minimized basis vectors as a coset vector; forming a partition basis by adding the coset vector to at least one member of the set of the minimized basis vectors; and forming a subsequent minimized basis from the partition basis. These codes circumvent the necessity for intersymbol interference removal, thereby reducing equalization complexity.

    摘要: A digital magnetic recording system comprises an input for a binary-encoded data signal comprising two symbols. The binary signal is converted, using a binary-to-ternary convolutional encoder, to a ternary signal comprising three symbols. The ternary signal is recorded onto a magnetic medium wherein two symbols are recorded using conventional saturation recording and a third symbol is recorded using a nonoriented state. The nonoriented state results from the application to the medium of a high-frequency oscillating magnetic flux. The recorded signal is subsequently reproduced and equalized. A Viterbi algorithm is used to convert the equalized signal back to the original binary signal which is then output from the system.

    摘要: A downhole telemetry system and method using discrete multi-tone modulation having repeated symbols. The system includes a surface receiver, a cable, and a downhole transmitter coupled to the surface receiver via the cable. The transmitter communicates a time-domain signal to the receiver. The time-domain signal has a cyclic prefix for a symbol at least as long as the length of the symbol. The system may alternatively include the time-domain signal having a symbol followed immediately by a copy of the symbol. The method includes receiving a time-domain signal carrying desired information at specific frequencies. The signal has at least one symbol. The method includes prepending a cyclic prefix having first length to the beginning of the symbol. The cyclic prefix has a second length no longer than the first length. The method may alternatively include appending a copy of the at least one symbol to the end of the at least one symbol.
