摘要:
An electrical connector assembly for making a tap connection between an insulated wire and a blade contact. The connector assembly includes an integrally formed housing which mounts a generally U-shaped terminal therein. The terminal includes an IDT portion and a blade-receiving portion, and the U-shape is defined by a pair of generally parallel leg portions joined by a bight portion. The leg portions define a longitudinal terminal axis generally centrally therebetween. The bight portion includes a blade-receiving slot extending into the leg portions and defining a bifurcated contact formation for receiving a blade contact with a locking recess along a centerline thereof. The bight portion is indented on one side of the terminal axis to define an offset portion inwardly of one of the leg portions. The blade-receiving slot and bifurcated contact formation extend into the offset portion. At least one locking projection is formed on the terminal at a portion of the offset portion along the longitudinal axis thereof and extends into the blade-receiving slot for lockingly engaging the locking recess of the blade contact.

An electrical connector assembly is provided for terminating an insulated electrical wire. The assembly includes a housing having a wire-receiving opening adapted to receive the insulated electrical wire. The housing is defined by two housing halves which are relatively movable between an open condition for insertion of an insulated wire into the opening and a closed condition. A terminal is mounted on the housing and has an insulation displacement slot positioned in the opening adapted to displace the insulation of the wire and electrically engage an inner conductor of the wire. Opposing flexible portions of the housing halves provide strain relief to the insulated electrical wire by gripping the wire substantially entirely thereabout when the housing halves are in their closed condition.

A tool head for use in crimping a connector to a conductor, where the connector and conductor extend in a longitudinal direction. The tool head defines a crimping area about which a plurality of crimping nibs are mounted for movement into the crimping area so that the nibs act to indent the connector during a crimping operation of the tool head. Each nib is elongated and includes a connector indenting surface formed by a segment of a cylinder the axis of which extends transverse to the direction of elongation of the nib. In the preferred embodiment, four nibs are provided to define two opposing pairs of nibs. The nibs of one opposing pair are elongated generally transverse to the longitudinal direction of the connector, and the other opposing pair of nibs are elongated generally parallel to the longitudinal direction of the connector. Therefore, the nibs of each pair are elongated generally perpendicular to the nibs of the opposite pair.
