    摘要: A tanker aircraft refueling boom utilizes an upper boom tube that connects to an aircraft fuselage, a lower boom tube that connects to the upper refueling tube, and a removable flexible tube with a nozzle that is connected to the lower boom tube. The flexible tube is bendable to accommodate movement of the tanker aircraft relative to the receiver aircraft during refueling. The flexible tube is expandable to absorb shock loads due to the conservation of momentum of the fuel when the fuel is shut off during delivery. The expandable flexible tube eliminates shock loads in other areas of the refueling boom. A ruddevator is attached to the refueling boom to permit aerial control of the upper, lower and flexible tubes prior to and during refueling. The flexible tube is independently removable from the refueling boom to facilitate convenient and cost-effective maintenance.

    摘要: An apparatus and method is disclosed for increasing the light output of a stereoscopic three-dimensional display system by reducing the light losses typically present when using a conventional beam-combining half-mirror, i.e. a beam splitting device (BSD). The separate outputs of two LCD monitors are optically superimposed, one for the left eye and one for the right eye of a user, in order to produce a brighter stereoscopic three-dimensional display. By selecting angles of linear polarization for the rear and the side LCD monitors or other display devices, embodiments of the invention can achieve as much as 60/60 efficiency for the display pair, according to the Fresnel laws of reflection regarding polarization. This intensity increase can provide a viewer a significantly brighter picture and allow the installation environment of the stereoscopic display to maintain higher ambient lighting conditions. Embodiments of the invention also can achieve both, a more efficient polarizer orientation, and the required mirror-image reversal in one simple step.

    摘要: A refueling system and method for use with a refueling tanker aircraft. The system and method involves the use of a camera system to provide imaging information concerning a receiver aircraft to the processor. The processor uses the imaging information to derive closure rate and distance information for the receiver aircraft as it approaches a refueling envelope prior to contact with a refueling boom. The processor also makes use of information from a look-up table to generate commands that are tailored to the specific type of aircraft being refueled. The commands are applied to a pilot's director lights display that generates visual commands or signals (e.g., “UP”, “DOWN”, “LEFT”, “RIGHT”) that assist the pilot of the receiver aircraft in guiding his/her aircraft toward and into the refueling envelope at a desired closure rate. The system and method eliminates potential error in the pre-contact phase of a refueling operation by eliminating judgment decisions by a boom operator when generating the commands for the pilot's director lights display.
