摘要: An objective of the present invention is to enable making a liquid crystal display device thin, and to enable regional control of window brightness with power conservation. A backlight of a liquid crystal display device comprises a plate-shaped light guiding plate (20). Recesses (21) are formed on the light guiding plate (20), and LEDs (30) are housed in the recesses (21). The LEDs (30) further comprise light emitting faces (301) and rear faces. The rear faces of the LEDs (30) are brought into contact with the interior walls of the recesses (21) of the light guiding plate, and light that leaks from the rear faces of the LEDs (30) is proactively used. A resin (25) for optical coupling is positioned between the LEDs (30) and the interior faces of the recesses (21). Using the light from the rear faces of the LEDs (30) allows reducing the number of LEDs that need to be lit, allowing obtaining a liquid crystal display device with minimized power consumption.

摘要: According to the present invention, area control of a liquid crystal display device prevents luminance insufficiency attributing to leaking of illumination light between adjacent areas. A peak luminance detector detects a peak luminance area in which a luminance level is equal to or higher than a first threshold. A peripheral luminance detector detects luminance levels of peripheral areas located adjacent to the peak luminance area. When the average of the luminance levels of the peripheral areas is equal to or lower than a second threshold, a peak luminance corrector increases a light source luminance level of a backlight cell that corresponds to the peak luminance area.

摘要: The initial color temperature setting can change when a plasma display panel (PDP) is driven for a long period of time. One cause is due to the non-uniform deterioration of red, green, and blue fluorescent materials due to the ultraviolet rays discharged during operation of the panel. Color temperature correction is performed by setting the numbers of discharge pulses for fluorescent materials in accordance with a discharge pulse number correction curve with respect to the cumulative elapsed driven time of the PDP.

摘要: A plurality of backlight blocks are aligned, each block includes light sources and a unit light guide plate for guiding light from the light sources to the side of a liquid crystal panel, unit diffusion patterns are formed in a zigzag alignment on the unit light guide plate and another diffusion pattern is formed on the back of the unit light guide plate. One side of the unit light guide plate is defined as a light entrance surface and LEDs as the light sources are aligned along the light entrance surface to satisfy p≧a≧c where a indicates the size of the unit diffusion pattern in a direction orthogonal to an exit optical axis of the LEDs, c indicates the size of an LED emission surface in the direction of alignment of the LEDs, and p indicates the pitch of alignment of the light sources.

摘要: The present invention mechanically protects a surface of a miniaturized liquid crystal display device for mobile phone or the like without deteriorating image quality and without increasing a thickness of a whole display device. To achieve such an object, in the present invention, a liquid crystal display panel is constituted of a TFT substrate and a color filter substrate, a lower polarizer is adhered to a lower surface of the TFT substrate, and an upper polarizer is adhered to an upper surface of the color filter substrate. A face plate is adhered to the upper polarizer using an acrylic adhesive material which is cured by ultraviolet rays. For enhancing strength and adhesion property of the face plate, corners and side portions of the face plate are chamfered. By making a profile of the face plate smaller than a profile of the upper polarizer, the adhesion property of the face plate is enhanced. The present invention can protect the surface of the liquid crystal display panel without deteriorating image quality and without largely increasing a thickness of the display device.

摘要: A cross section of each divided light guiding plate is formed in a wedge shape, a step is formed at a portion of each divided light guiding plate where LEDs are arranged, and holes used for accommodating the LEDs are formed at the step. A plated face is formed on a lower face of each LED, and is coupled to a wiring substrate through solder. Each LED includes a light-emitting face, a lower frame, and an upper frame. The height of the lower frame of each LED is larger than the height of the upper frame, so that a lower end of the light-emitting face of each LED can be always located higher than a lower end of the divided light guiding plate.

摘要: An LCD device using LEDs as light sources provided herein is capable of reducing the manufacturing cost and the power consumption by a reduction in the number of LEDs used. A backlight according to the present invention includes LEDs mounted on a wiring board and a light guide plate having a matrix array of light guide plate blocks assigned the LEDs. The number of LEDs assigned to the block located in a peripheral area is smaller than the number assigned to the block located around the center to reduce the number of LEDs used in the backlight. If a ratio of the brightness in a peripheral area of the screen to the brightness in a central area is 60% or higher, the human eye does not perceive non-uniform luminance. Thus, the manufacturing cost and the power consumption of the LCD device can be reduced.

In the present invention, a liquid crystal display panel has a TFT substrate, a color filter substrate, a lower polarizer adhered to a TFT substrate's lower surface, and an upper polarizer adhered to an color filter substrate's upper surface. A face plate is adhered to the upper polarizer using an acrylic adhesive material cured by ultraviolet rays. For enhancing strength and adhesion of the face plate, corners and side portions of the face plate are chamfered. By making the face plate's profile smaller than the upper polarizer's profile, the adhesion properties of the face plate are enhanced. The present invention protects the liquid crystal display panel's surface without deteriorating image quality or substantially increasing the display device's thickness.
