Abstract: A process and apparatus for the continuous casting of thin steel slabs in which a chilled surface submerged below the surface of a pool of molten metal is exposed to molten metal to cause an embryo cast strand to be formed thereon and in which the embryo strand is withdrawn upwardly continuously over a continuation of said chilled surface. The strand may be moved directly from withdrawal rolls to reshaping rollers while still retaining sufficient residual heat to permit reshaping without reheating.

Abstract: In a continuous casting process in which a partially solidified strand of rectangular cross section is formed continuously in a water cooled mold and comprises upper and lower curved surfaces of different radii, and in which the said strand is curved and follows a curved path through a secondary cooling zone, the curved strand is straightened by applying cooling water to the curved surface of the strand which is of greater radius at an intensity sufficient to reduce the surface temperature thereof below the surface temperature of the surface of lesser radius to produce a temperature differential between said surfaces sufficient to straighten the strand.

Abstract: In processes for the continuous casting of steel slabs in which molten steel is poured continuously into the upper end of a mold having a curved mold passage and in which an embryo casting (in curved form) is withdrawn continuously from the lower end of the mold, it is known that as the steel solidifies, accumulations of impurities, such as non-metallics occur in the surface of lesser radius. It is specifically proposed to prevent the accumulation of such non-metallics at or near the surface of the casting which is of lesser radius, which is a defect of slab casting produced on the standard curved mold continuous casting machines, by maintaining such surface in continuous contact with the opposed curved surface of the mold utilizing the force of gravity or other means to maintain continuous contact betwen the surface and the mold wall in order to cool the surface continuously and intensively throughout the movement of the embryo casting through the mold.

Abstract: In the continuous casting of very wide steel slabs, the use of the conventional transverse rollers to support the wide side walls of the slab to prevent bulging or deflection thereof due to the ferrostatic pressure applied thereto by the molten core or due to other stresses is avoided by applying intensive cooling to the surfaces of the narrow end walls of the slab and to the surfaces of the immediately adjoining wide side walls to increase the wall thickness of said end walls and of the immediately adjoining wide side walls more rapidly than the thickness of the portions of the wide side walls extending laterally therefrom is increased whereby the thickened end walls and immediately adjoining thickened portions of the wide side walls act as the ends of constrained beams to support and resist deflection of the remaining portions of the wide side walls.
