A fluid-ejection device includes a handheld and/or mountable enclosure, a pneumatic fitting, an electrical connector, and a controller. The pneumatic fitting extends from and/or through the enclosure and is receptive to placement of a tip thereon. The tip contains a supply of fluid, a fluid-ejection mechanism, and an electrical connector for the fluid-ejection mechanism. The electrical connector extends from and/or through the enclosure and is receptive to electrical coupling of the electrical connector of the tip. The controller is situated within the enclosure to cause the tip to eject the fluid via the electrical coupling of the electrical connectors of the tip and the fluid-ejection device.

A tip to be placed on a fluid-ejection device is filled with fluid. The fluid may be introduced into a substantially hollow body of the tip at a first end of the body. The body of the tip has a second end at which a fluid-ejection mechanism is disposed to eject the fluid as controlled by the fluid-ejection device. The fluid may be introduced into the substantially hollow body of the tip through of the fluid-ejection mechanism disposed at the second end of the body of the tip. The tip may further be identified and/or serviced, and the tip and/or the fluid-ejection device may further be validated.

Devices, methodologies, and other embodiments associated with fluid ejection devices are described. One exemplary embodiment includes a fluid ejection device that comprises a plurality of firing cells configured to eject fluid when activated. The firing cells can be grouped into firing groups of firing cells including a first fire group and a second fire group. A circuit can be provided that is configured to activate selected firing cells where the circuit is configured to respond to activation signals including a first fire pulse to activate the firing cells of the first fire group and a second fire pulse to activate the firing cells of the second fire group. The circuit can also be configured to activate the first fire group and the second fire group to eject fluid overlapping in time.

A manufacturing method provides ink-jet writing engine modules for use with a compatible hard copy engine module, a hard copy apparatus based thereon, and methods of manufacturing, operation, and use. Fluidic and electronic partitioning for ink-jet hard copy apparatus is redefined. Modular separation of a hard copy engine from a writing engine allows a replaceable writing module containing all of the key elements of the ink-jet writing system based on writing system technology requirements, particularly for those most likely to age or fail as a result of time, frequency of use, or end-user actions. The writing engine subsystem includes: one or more printing modules having print head elements with concomitant ink manifold components and ink flow and pressure regulation mechanisms; one or more ink containers—either permanent, refillable, or replaceable; one or more ink formulations; one or more ink delivery means, such as tubes and valves fluidically coupling the ink containers to the ink manifolds; service station components; and a framework to retain the elements in a unitary module, insertable cassette-like manner.

The present invention further provides a hard copy engine compatible with such a writing engine. The hard copy engine does not contain any components requiring direct contact with ink. Ink-wetted components are predisposed to ink-jet technological changes without affecting the electrical interface and the mechanical interface between the writing engine and the hard copy engine.

An ink replenishment system for an inkjet printing mechanism has an ink reservoir that is removably receivable by the inkjet printing mechanism to deliver an ink composition to an inkjet printhead for printing. The ink reservoir contains a large volume of colorless ink vehicle and one or more smaller containers of colorant or other ink components separate from the vehicle. At the time of desired use, a user makes a selection which activates the selected colorant and/or other ink constituent to mix with the vehicle to produce the desired ink composition. This ink replenishment system may be used in a replaceable inkjet cartridge ink dispensing system, or in an off-axis ink dispensing system, and a method of accomplishing such ink replenishment is also provided.

A fluid ejection device includes a plurality of firing cells and a fire line adapted to conduct an energy signal including energy pulses. Each firing cell in the plurality of firing cells includes a firing resistor, a drive switch, a first data switch, and a second data switch. The drive switch is configured to enable the firing resistor to respond to the energy signal. The first data switch is configured to receive data signals that represent an image and to latch the data signals to provide latched data signals. The second data switch is configured to receive the latched data signals and control the drive switch to enable the firing resistor to respond to the energy signal and heat fluid to be ejected based on the latched data signals.
