A microwave phased array antenna module. The antenna module includes a mandrel having an integrally formed waveguide splitter. Separate electromagnetic wave energy distribution panels that each include DC power, data and logic interconnects, as well as electronic modules incorporating ASICs, phase shifters and power amplifiers, are disposed on opposite sides of the mandrel. Waveguide coupling elements are further secured to the mandrel on opposing sides thereof to couple the electromagnetic wave energy received through an input port of the mandrel with each of the distribution panels. Antenna modules are disposed within openings formed in a second end of the mandrel and electrically coupled via electrical interconnects with the distribution panels. The use of the distribution panels provides ample room for the needed electronics while the use of radiating modules disposed at the second end of the mandrel in a brick-type architecture arrangement relative to distribution panels, enables the extremely tight radiating module spacing needed for V-band operation at up to +/−60° scan angles.

An electronically scanned antenna system includes a plurality of array elements and a control system. Each array element has a plurality of reflecting components capable of reflecting an electromagnetic wave incident thereon. Each reflecting component, in turn, is interconnected to at least one reflecting segment by at least one switch. In this regard, when the switches are in a closed state the respective reflecting segments are electrically coupled to the respective reflecting components to thereby alter a reflective geometry of the respective reflecting components. The control system is capable of controlling the switches to thereby control the array elements to provide a desired degree of phase shift to a signal reflected from the antenna. Advantageously, the control system is capable of controlling the switches of one reflecting component at the same time the control system controls corresponding switches of other reflecting components.

A phased array antenna system including a plurality of metal, column-like elements formed adjacent the RF probes for improving the electrical performance of the system. In one embodiment a hole is formed in a multi-layer, probe-integrated printed wiring board of the system and metal material is plated thereon to fill the hole. The metal, column-like elements are each disposed generally in between associated pairs of the RF probes. The metal, column-like elements essentially form metal pins that improve the return loss bandwidth, probe-to-probe isolation, insertion loss bandwidth, higher order mode suppression and cross-polarization generation.

A phased array antenna system for an aircraft which allows a beam from the antenna to be scanned down to or below the horizon when the aircraft is traveling at high latitudes. The system comprises a conformal phased array antenna aperture mounted on either a top, port or a starboard side of a fuselage of the aircraft, and at least one feedhorn mounted either in a blade secured to the fuselage or in a leading edge of a horizontal stabilizer of the aircraft. The feedhorn illuminates the conformal antenna aperture and the aperture projects a beam therefrom which can be more easily directed at targets at or below the horizon. The invention allows smaller antenna apertures to be used to scan a beam toward the horizon.

An integrated ceramic chip carrier module for a phased array antenna. The module is comprised of a plurality of layers of low temperature, co-fired ceramic formed into an integrated module. The module combines the injection molded probes, button layer and holder, and the ceramic chip carrier into a single integrated component part. This construction provides for improved performance, reliability, manufacturing repeatability, and lower overall antenna manufacturing costs.

An electronically steerable phased array antenna module having a conformable circuit element. The conformable circuit element forms a packaging architecture which includes a flexible substrate on which the control electronics of the antenna can be mounted directly or electrically coupled to the flexible substrate. The radiating elements are integrally formed on the substrate together with monolithic transmission lines which couple the radiating elements to the integrated circuits forming the control electronics. In one preferred embodiment, integrated power combiner/splitters may be integrally formed on the conformable circuit element and integrated transmission feed lines are formed on the circuit element coupling the power combiner/splitter circuits to the control electronics. The conformable circuit element provides a packaging architecture which enables a large plurality of antenna radiating elements and associated interconnecting transmission and feed to be packaged in a cost efficient and compact manner, and which can be easily adapted for a variety of different forms of phased array antennas.
