Multiple layers allow the label to be removed from an object by separation of adhesive which cohesively fails and then, re-application of the label to a new object by revealing a new pressure sensitive adhesive layer. Similarly, printable face sheets may be removed for multiple printings or the face sheet arranged in a manner which allows distinct regions to be printed in sequence with the previous region being overprinted. To allow passage through a printer after removal, separable liners are included so that the pressure sensitive adhesive layer is not exposed until immediately prior to re-affixation to the desired object.

The linerless label tracking system consists of an RF transponder which includes a memory for storing data that can be read by a user with conventional reading devices. The RF transponder comprises an antenna and an IC chip and is incorporated into a linerless label. The lineress label comprises an adhesive layer and an outer surface layer onto which indicia can be printed. The adhesive layer further comprises a pressure sensitive material. The outer surface layer comprises a direct thermal label or tag stock (paper, film, or combination). The RF transponder is incorporated into the linerless label in one of many ways and the linerless label is then applied to the item to be tracked.

A web of linerless label stock having a recording layer on a top surface and an adhesive layer on a bottom surface is provided with registration marks printed onto the adhesive layer. The linerless label stock further includes perforation lines in correspondence with the registration marks. The spacing between adjacent ones of the registration marks may be selected to correspond with desired width of the linerless labels. To process the linerless label stock, the web of linerless label stock is first sent through a flexographic printing system where registration marks are applied to the adhesive layer at constant intervals. After the registration marks are applied, the web of label stock passes through a die station that perforates the web in correspondence with the registration marks. The web is then wound up into finished rolls to be placed on a thermal printer.
