Abstract: A method for recovering methane gas from a landfill involves the use of a main absorber, a flash system, an optional ancillary absorber and an optional polishing absorber. The recovered gas is maintained at a temperature that enhances a solvent's ability to absorb carbon dioxide from the recovered gas. While the main absorber uses the solvent for absorbing most of the carbon dioxide from the recovered gas, the flash system removes much of the carbon dioxide from the solvent exiting the main absorber. In some examples, at least portion of the flash system operates at subatmospheric pressure to create a vacuum that draws in a generally inert stripper gas (e.g., air, nitrogen, etc.) at atmospheric pressure. The stripper gas helps remove carbon dioxide from the solvent in the flash system.

Abstract: A method of using a triple-effect absorption system to recover methane from landfill gas contaminated with CO2 and trace contaminates such as chlorinated hydrocarbons and aromatics involves processing the landfill gas with three absorbers and a flash system. One absorber uses a solvent to absorb the trace contaminants from the landfill gas, the second absorber in conjunction with the flash system extracts CO2 from the gas, and just a first portion of that CO2 is used for stripping the trace contaminates from the solvent in the third absorber. The rest of the extracted CO2 is vented to atmosphere to prevent dampening the combustion of the trace contaminants absorbed by the first portion of CO2.

Abstract: A method for recovering methane gas from a landfill involves the use of a main absorber, a flash system, an ancillary absorber and a polishing absorber. The main absorber uses a main current of solvent for absorbing most of the carbon dioxide from raw landfill gas. The flash system removes much of the carbon dioxide from the solvent exiting the main absorber. A portion of the solvent downstream of the flash system is diverted to the ancillary absorber in which a current of air removes additional carbon dioxide from that portion of solvent. From the ancillary absorber, the diverted portion of solvent flows through the polishing absorber to remove additional carbon dioxide from the main current of solvent that was previously treated in the main absorber. To increase the energy content of the processed gas, in some examples, propane is added to the final outgoing gas stream.
