    Abstract: A stab-type coupling joint for connecting an end portion of a smooth wall pipe or tube to fittings or other pipes. The stabtype coupling joint includes a hollow body member or sleeve member made from steel, the sleeve member being rolled at least at one end and at a point spaced from the end for retaining pipe gripping and sealing means such as a solid annular backup insert ring, a solid annular finger pipe gripper washer, a rigid annular washer, and a second insert ring with sealing rings in series and the sleeve member further including stop means spaced inwardly from the pipe receiving aperture of the same to prevent overinsertion of the pipe through the annular finger pipe gripper washer. Suitable sealing means are provided between the exterior of the pipe and the second insert ring, as well as between the interior of the sleeve member and the second insert means, these sealing means being positioned outwardly of the annular finger pipe gripper washer whereby ground fluids are sealed out, the length of insertion of the pipe is reduced, and the sealing means between the pipe and the second insert do not have to seal across scratches on the exterior of the pipe. The sleeve member may have identical end portions with mirror-image or reversed pipe gripper and sealing means therein whereby pipes may be stabbed from opposite ends of the sleeve member or the sleeve member may have one end for connection to a fitting or to another pipe by means of welds, threads, or the like.

    Abstract: A plastic meter box is disclosed for housing a fluid meter below the ground level wherein the box includes a side wall enclosure having at least two openings proximate the bottom thereof for receiving pipes which communicate fluid with respect to a fluid meter positioned within the enclosure. A base plate is fixedly secured to the bottom of the side wall enclosure by means of a plurality of plastic rivets. The base plate is formed of a thermoplastic material and has three levels, an upper level, an intermediate level and a lower level. The lower level of the base plate has a plurality of holes therethrough for permitting the egress of fluid with respect to the box. The intermediate level supports a yoke which in turn supports the fluid meter positioned within the box. The upper level of the base plate serves to position the yoke within the meter box and hence to maintain the position of the fluid meter with respect to the meter box. In addition, the upper level facilitates the positioning of the meter box onto the base plate before the plastic rivets are assembled.

    Abstract: A cutter member for use in cutting a hole in plastic pipe having a thick wall or a thin wall. The cutter member is rotated and advanced with a positive predetermined lead against the pipe, the cutter member being so designed that after it has cut the initial chips off the outside curvature of the pipe, it cuts a continuous chip by a peeling action and the initial chips and continuous chip are discharged inwardly of the cutter member above the coupon being cut. The cutter member may be repeatedly used and it can be used with a drilling tool or machine or, for that matter, a tapping tee. The preferable drilling machine for use with the cutter machine is of simple construction, including a tubular body member, a two-piece boring bar with one member having threads thereon for positively advancing the cutter member, and the other member of the boring bar being adapted to receive the cutter member. The drilling tool is detachably attached to a pipe or to a fitting operatively connected to the pipe, the fitting having the usual passageway therethrough and the boring bar being arranged to extend through the passageway to the wall of the pipe to be cut. The drilling tool is provided with means where the boring bar can be rapidly advanced to the cutting position or rapidly retracted after cutting and, further, the drilling tool is designed to prevent blow out of the boring bar when cutting pipes under pressure.

    Abstract: A tamperproof open bottom stop is disclosed which includes a housing having a circular tapered valve seat with at least one fluid flow passage therethrough. A tapered plug or key member is positioned in the valve seat and is rotatable with respect thereto. The plug has a flow passage therethrough which is movable into and out of registration with the flow passage of the housing to open and close the valve. A means for maintaining the tapered plug tightly seated against the tapered valve seat is provided in the form of a nut threaded about an axial extension of the tapered plug. Thus, when the nut is tightened around the stop housing, the plug is pulled inwardly into the valve seat to thereby provide a tight interface between the plug and the valve seat. A protective cap is placed over the end of the tapered plug and is secured thereto by means of a tamperproof screw which is threaded into the end of the plug. The threads of the tamperproof screw are left-handed as opposed to the right-handed threads of the axial extension of the plug, thereby preventing the nut from being turned in a direction which will loosen the tapered plug but permitting the nut to be rotated in the opposite direction so as to tighten the plug against the valve seat.

    Abstract: A safety coupling for connecting two sections of a vertical standard-like member such as a fire hydrant, light pole, sign post, vertical post of a guard rail or similar accessories wherein the upper section is intended to move when subjected to a lateral shock from any angle without damage to the lower anchored or support section.
