    摘要: A method is provided for authenticating debit card transactions engaged in by a cardholder on a communications network. The method includes: a) establishing a connection over the network with a client being used by the cardholder to engage in a transaction on the network; b) providing over the connection to the client a web page containing a keypad (22) having a plurality of buttons (24) that collectively define a geometry of the keypad (22), the keypad (22) being employed by the cardholder to enter a PIN via selection of the buttons (24) with a pointing device of the client; c) obtaining over the connection the PIN enter by the cardholder; d) determining if the obtained PIN is correct for a debit card being used by the cardholder to engage in the transaction; e) repeating step a) through d) for each transaction the cardholder engages in on the network; and, f) with respect to two transactions engaged in by the cardholder, changing at least one of a location of the keypad (22) on the web page, the geometry of the keypad (22), a size of the buttons (24) and a spacing between neighboring buttons (24).

Thereafter, completion of the transaction is authorized (390) and an authorization code (392) established therefor is communicated to the participating merchant (20).

The payment instrument being used is either enrolled in or not enrolled in an authentication program conforming to one of a plurality of authentication protocols prescribed for the respective plurality of different types of payment instruments by payment networks supporting the same. The method includes: obtaining payment information for the transaction from the merchant, the payment information including a number identifying the particular payment instrument being used; determining the type of payment instrument being used from the payment information; obtaining an authentication determination for the transaction in accordance with the authentication protocols prescribed for the determined type of payment instrument being used; and, returning the obtained authentication determination to the merchant.

The method includes: receiving payment information over a communications network at a server operatively connected to the communications network, the payment information identifying a particular payment option used by the second party for the transaction, and the server being equipped to format and route messages over the communications network in different manners to accommodate the plurality of different authentication protocols; determining from the payment information received at the server which of the different authentication protocols is prescribed for the type of payment option identified in the payment information; selecting, in accordance with the determination, a particular authentication protocol from the plurality of different authentication protocols supported by the server; obtaining an authentication determination for the transaction in accordance with the selected authentication protocol, including formatting messages and routing the formatted messages over the communications network in accordance with one or more mandates of the selected authentication protocol; and generating a one-time number to be sent back to the first party.
