摘要: An adjustable steering column assembly includes a releasable clamp assembly that clamps a shroud of the assembly in position relative to a support bracket, the clamp assembly including an elongate clamp bolt onto which are stacked:at least a part of an adjustable shroud of the steering assembly, anda cam mechanism comprising a fixed cam part and a moving cam part, the two parts each having a bore through which the clamp bolt passes,a thrust bearing,and a locking nut which includes an internal thread that engages a complimentary thread on the clamp bolt and which is locked down so as to apply an axial load to the thrust bearing. The assembly also includes a tapered compliant bush which is pressed into a space defined between the clamp bolt and the bore of the moving cam part of the cam mechanism with the relatively thick end of the bush nearest the thrust bearing and with the thrust bearing applying an axial load to the bush.

摘要: A steering column assembly has an adjustable shroud comprising a fixed portion secured to the vehicle body and a moving portion which can be collapsed telescopically through a normal range of adjustment relative to the fixed portion, a support bracket secured to a fixed part of the vehicle and a clamp mechanism. The assembly includes a blocking mechanism which is an integral part of a locking lever of the clamp assembly so arranged that when the clamp mechanism is in unclamped the blocking mechanism prevents the moving portion from collapsing beyond the normal range of movement in the collapse direction by providing a path for axial forces applied to the moving portion to pass through the blocking mechanism to a stopper fixed relative to the vehicle body and when the clamp mechanism is clamped the blocking mechanism is held clear of the stopper to permit additional telescopic movement of the moving portion towards the fixed portion beyond the normal range of adjustment.

摘要: An adjustable steering column assembly includes a first shroud portion comprising an outer tube, a second shroud portion which comprises an inner tube, and a clamp mechanism that includes a part that is fixed relative to the outer tube, the first and second shroud portions being releasably engaged by the clamp mechanism to selectively permit an amount of relative movement between the first and second shroud portions that is required during adjustment of the steering column assembly, the assembly further including an energy absorbing member which includes a strap that interconnects the inner tube and the part of the clamp bolt assembly, the assembly being so arranged that upon collapse the inner tube moves relative to the clamp assembly whereupon the energy absorbing member is deformed beyond its elastic limit, thereby absorbing energy in the system to control the collapse of the assembly.

摘要: A clamp assembly secures a fixed portion of a steering column assembly to a movable portion of a steering column. It comprises a rack of teeth carried by the moving portion and a rack of teeth carried by the fixed portion and an inner hollow toothed block nested inside an outer hollow toothed block, each carrying at least one rack of teeth with the rack of teeth on the inner block facing the rack of teeth on the moving portion and the rack of teeth on the outer block facing the rack of teeth on the fixed portion. A retaining clip provides a lost motion coupling between the retaining clip and the inner toothed block and an independent lost motion coupling between the retaining clip and the inner toothed block and an independent motion coupling between the retaining clip and the outer toothed block. First, second and third springs bias the teeth of the blocks into and out of engagement with the racks when locked and unlocked. The assembly helps prevent damage to the teeth with the springs permitting the damage force on the blocks to be independently absorbed.

摘要: A steering column assembly comprises an inner tube and an outer tube that surrounds the inner tube along at least part of its length, in a relaxed condition the outer tube being a relatively loose fit around the inner tube, an elongate slot in the outer tube which can be at least partially closed by applying a load either side of the slot to cause a reduction in the internal diameter of the tube, a pair of flanges which are fixed to the tube on opposing sides of the slot, and a clamp mechanism which connects one flange to the other, the clamp mechanism being movable between a clamped position in which it applies a clamping force to the flanges that acts to reduce the width of the slot and so tightens the outer tube around the inner tube, and an unclamped position in which the clamping force is reduced to permit the flanges to move away from one another as the tube returns towards its relaxed condition. It further comprises a catch which is secured at one end to one of the flanges and catches a part of the other flange at its other end, the catch preventing movement of the flanges beyond a position in which the inner diameter of the outer tube is equal to a predetermined maximum value.

摘要: A steering column assembly includes a steering column shroud which supports a steering shaft for a steering wheel. The column shroud includes an inner member and an outer member. The inner member being at least partially received within the outer member. A support bracket is fixed in position relative to a part of the vehicle. A clamp mechanism is movable between a locked position in which the clamp mechanism fixes the inner member and the outer member in position relative to the support bracket and an unlocked position in which the clamp mechanism permits movement of at least one of the inner and outer members relative to the support bracket. The clamp mechanism includes a clamp pin that passes through an opening in the support bracket and is connected to a loop plate. The loop plate includes at least one loop portion that loops a portion of the shroud and which is drawn towards the support bracket as the clamp mechanism is moved to a locked position, thereby to clamp the shroud in position relative to the support bracket.

摘要: A steering column assembly comprises a steering column shroud comprising an inner and an outer tubular member, a support bracket which is fixed to part of the vehicle, and a clamp assembly which includes a cab mechanism having a fixed portion and a moving portion and a clamp pin which passes through arms of the support bracket, the clamp pin being provided with a first reaction member located towards one end of the pin outside of one arm of the support bracket and a second reaction member located towards the other end of the clamp pin outside of the other arm of the support bracket such that the arms of the bracket are located on the clamp pin between the reaction members and with the cam assembly located between the outside of one arm and one of the reaction members. The fixed cam portion is mechanically connected to the support bracket such that at least during an initial release phase of the clamp assembly the force required to produce a rotational movement of the fixed cam portion relative to the support bracket exceeds any rotational force exerted on the fixed part due to strain energy stored in the assembly.
