摘要:
An optical character recognition system is arranged to process format conditioning documents which designate the locations of data fields on data documents to be read. Those portions of the data documents outside the data fields which are designated by the conditioning document are rendered invisible to the system, thereby permitting the system to process only data which may be located in the midst of other printed matter. A fine line adjustment capability permits the system to reposition the document as necessary to locate a data field which is not located precisely as had been indicated by the format conditioning document. The system is thus automatically adaptable to any data format without requiring specialized programming. The system samples successive vertical slices of data characters being optically scanned and reassembles the slices electronically for purposes of recognition. The position of each slice is analyzed in order to predict the position, relative to the photo-sensitive array, of the next slice. This permits reliable system adaptation to a data line which is fully or partially skewed relative to its document page. Failure to recognize one or more data characters during scan of a line results in successive automatic re-scans of that line with automatic increase of detection sensitivity during each re-scan to permit characters of relatively light print to be recognized.

An optical arrangement for character recognition systems utilizes the same optical path for both illuminating the text and projecting the text onto an array of photosensitive elements. A low power laser beam of cross-section slightly larger than a unit vertical slice of a text character is projected by a prism through a lens arrangement to a scanning mirror which reflects the beam to sequentially illuminate individual text character slices. Each illuminated slice is reflected by the mirror through the lens arrangement onto a linear array of photosensitive elements. The focus of the lens arrangement is varied in synchronization with the mirror scan to correct for changes in the distance between the mirror and text characters at different scan angles. The page is oriented at a slight angle relative to the scan axis of the mirror to eliminate specular reflection. The resultant skew created in the reflected characters as a function of scan angle is compensated for by rotating the photosensitive array about the optical path axis as a function of mirror scan angle.

A selectively operable optical path is provided to permit visual display of a character that cannot be recognized by an optical character recognition machine. Visual display of such characters permits visual observation of the enlarged character by an operator who, if he recognizes the character can insert it by a keyboard mechanism and if he cannot recognize it he may reject the document as unintelligible.
