    摘要: A compressor-expander for use in air conditioning which includes a housing having a chamber of oval profile divided into a compression side and an expansion side and containing a cylindrical rotor having a plurality of outwardly biased vanes forming compartments which progressively decrease and then increase in volume as the rotor rotates. The housing has compression side inlet and outlet ports and expansion side inlet and outlet ports, with the heat exchanger being connected between the compression side outlet port and the expansion side inlet port so that an incoming charge of air is first compressed, flows at constant pressure through the heat exchanger where the heat of compression is removed and then expands in the expansion side to produce a sharp drop in temperature for discharge in the cold state. To improve thermal efficiency, a flexible liner of thin cross section covers the wall of the chamber, a layer of insulation being interposed under the lining to inhibit flow of heat from the compression side to the expansion side. Means are provided for peripherally shifting the liner, if desired, to change the phase of the port positions. In one embodiment, the liner is in the form of a continuous strip supported upon insulated pedestals formed in the wall of the chamber and with diametrically opposed means being provided for applying peripheral shifting movement in opposite directions. In another embodiment, the liner has ends terminating in interdigitated fingers having a limited amount of endwise clearance so that when traction is applied to one of the ends of the liner for adjustment purposes, the effect is to reduce the diametrical dimension of the liner and thus unseat it from the wall of the chamber. When bottoming occurs at the fingers, the liner is bodily shifted to the new position. In a final aspect of the invention, the liner is in the form of a plurality of strips each of which carries a portion of the port openings and with the strips being individually shiftable to vary the relative positions of the ports.

    摘要: A refrigeration system employing a rotary unitary compressorexpander for use with a pressurized fluid source and which is powered by the fluid which is being refrigerated. The unitary compressor-expander is formed of a stator having a chamber of oval cross section occupied by a rotor fitted with radially slidable vanes, with the tips of the vanes sealingly engaging the wall of the chamber. The sides of the ''''oval,'''' which define compressor and expander portions, each have respective inlet and outlet openings. The inlet of the compressor portion is connected to the source of pressurized fluid and the outlet of the expander portion is vented to the cooled space which is at a lower, ambient pressure. For coupling together the outlet of the compressor and the inlet of the expander, a heat exchanger is provided which dissipates the heat of compression with substantially no loss in pressure. The two portions of the compressor-expander are made non-symmetrical so that the differential change in volume during compression is less than the differential change in volume during expansion with the result that the rotor derives its rotative power solely from the pressurized fluid being cooled. Several ways of achieving the desired non-symmetry are disclosed including changing the angle which separates the inlet and outlet ports and making the oval chamber non-symmetrical with respect to the rotor.

    摘要: A rotary unitary compressor-expander for use as a refrigeration device. The unit includes a stator defining a chamber having an oval cross-section and a rotor mounted within the chamber. The rotor contains a plurality of radial vane slots into each of which is inserted a vane which is radially slidable within its slot. Each vane includes, at either edge, a vane pin or stubshaft on which is rotatably mounted a vane roller. Oval cam tracks are provided at the ends of the stator chamber for engaging the vane rollers. One or more continuous spring bands are contained within the rotor and produce on the vanes an outwardly biasing force which urges the vane rollers into continuous contact with the cam tracks. The cam tracks are so symmectrically sized and positioned with respect to the stator chamber that with the vane rollers thus maintained in contact with the cam tracks, the vane tips are maintained in ''''clearance'''' sealing engagement with the wall of the stator chamber.

    摘要: An air conditioning unit having a driven rotor with a plurality of vanes and defining a compressor portion and an expander portion, each having inlet and outlet ports, with a first heat exchanger connected between the compressor outlet port and the expander inlet port. A non-condensing gas such as air is fed into the compressor inlet port, compressed, cooled by the heat exchanger, and expanded back to substantially its initial pressure for discharge in the cold state at the expander outlet port, a non-condensing gas being defined as any gas which does not condense at the pressures and temperatures encountered in the unit. In accordance with the main feature of the present invention, means are provided for causing the non-condensing gas, as it enters the inlet port of the compressor, to be substantially saturated with a condensible additive fluid, having a high heat of vaporization and which condenses within the range of temperature achieved in the expander thereby to release heat of vaporization in the expander resulting in an increase in the work of expansion to reduce the net work required to drive the rotor. In one embodiment of the invention the system is open and air is used as gas, with water as the additive. In such embodiment the cold air is directly to the cooled space. In a second embodiment a second heat exchanger is connected between the expander outlet port and the compressor inlet port to form a closed loop sealed against escape of gas. When the system is closed, the gas and additive fluid may take many different forms, and a lubricant may be included to lubricate the vanes of the rotor.

At least one auxiliary equalizer port is provided in the frame of the device spaced slightly upstream of the expansion side outlet port and communicating with a region of ambient pressure so that, as an exiting charge of air approaches the outlet port, air may flow through the equalizer port with the result that the initial pressure of the exiting charge of air tends to be more nearly equalized with respect to the pressure existing at the expansion side outlet port, thereby to minimize explosive puffing of air and its attendant noise upon traverse of the vanes past the expansion side outlet port. In one embodiment of the invention the equalizer port occupies a distributed locus for spreading the equalization function over a greater angle of rotor rotation. In such event the equalizer port may consist of a diagonally arranged series of openings. In another embodiment of the invention a plurality of equalizer ports are coupled to ambient air through a conduit having an interposed muffler.

    摘要: A compressor-expander for use in air conditioning which includes a rotor rotating in a chamber of oval cross section having a compression side and an expansion side, each with inlet and outlet ports. Hinged to the periphery of the rotor are a plurality of axially extending vanes which are biased outwardly into engagement with the wall of the chamber to form compartments of varying volume. Each vane is equipped, along its outer edge, with a sealing member having rollers which support the member at a desired close running clearance with respect to the wall of the chamber. The sealing members have a curved profile which matches the curve of the supporting rollers so that the same running clearance is maintained in spite of the changes in the angling of the vane which occur during the rotative cycle. The rotor is formed with longitudinal grooves for receiving the sealing members and with adjacent recesses for receiving the rollers for minimizing the residual volume between adjacent vanes when the vanes are in their inwardly folded positions. The vanes are angled retreatingly with respect to the direction of rotation of the rotor so that the force resulting from inward acceleration of a vane when it is crowded inwardly due to the oval shape assists centrifugal force and the biasing force in maintaining the vane in engagement with the wall of the chamber, in spite of the tendency of the compressed air to unseat the vane from the wall. In the preferred embodiment of the invention each vane is in the form of a thin laminated leaf spring, mounted cantilever-fashion on the rotor. In alternative forms of the invention the vanes are rigid having a rockable tongue and groove engagement with the rotor surface. In a final embodiment of the invention each vane has means at its outer edge positively for positioning the vane with respect to the wall of the chamber, holding it inwardly to establish running clearance and holding it outwardly so that it does not yield or retreat in the face of the reaction pressure of the compressed air.

    摘要: An air conditioning system based upon use of a vane type compressor-expander and which includes means for tempering and drying the air discharged into the conditioned space as well as reducing any noise caused by the vanes. The air containing ice particles is conducted into a filter formed of porous, thermally conductive material, preferably sintered metal. The filter is thermally coupled to the ambient air so that it is maintained above freezing temperatures so that ice particles entrapped by the filter are converted into liquid moisture which is drained away. The discharge surface of the filter element is, in one embodiment of the invention, subjected to a flow of ambient air which not only warms the filter element but which mixes with the cold air being discharged therefrom to form a tempered air mix which is vented into the space. In another embodiment of the invention the filter is thermally coupled to the ambient by means of conductive fins. Flow of ambient air for tempering purposes is induced by an auxiliary fan, but in one embodiment of the invention the compressor-expander is provided with inlet and outlet conduits which are adjacent to one another with a filter in the outlet conduit which is thermally coupled to ambient air flowing through the inlet conduit and with provision for adjusting a degree of coupling.
