Apparatus for collating sheet like elements that includes initially feeding the sheet elements by a first conveyor in a spaced tandem relation at a high linear velocity into a spiral carrier. The spiral carrier includes a plurality of arcuate fingers having spiral slots formed therebetween. The sheets traveling at the relatively high rate of speed are projected individually into the slots of the spiral carrier also traveling at a relatively high linear speed. As each of the sheets follows the inwardly spiraling path of the slots, their linear velocity is substantially reduced so that when the sheet edges contact a stop plate, they are decelerated from the initial high linear speed. The stop plate directs the sheets radially outwardly from the slots of the spiral carrier into frictional engagement between the endless belts of a second conveyor. The second conveyor traveling at a substantially lower linear speed feeds the sheets in a continuous stream exposing only a marginal edge between adjacent elements for completion of further production operations. The sheet like elements are then supplied by the second conveyor in underlapped relation to a separator conveyor and are discharged therefrom onto a transfer conveyor.

Apparatus for applying adhesive to an envelope blank includes a rotatably mounted shaft with an adhesive applicator assembly secured thereto. The applicator assembly has a body portion of generally rectangular configuration with a bottom wall, pairs of side walls and a top wall. An air actuated piston cylinder assembly is mounted on the bottom wall of the body portion substantially parallel to the axis of the rotatable shaft. A pair of L-shaped levers are pivotally secured intermediate their end portions to the side walls of the body portion and have one end portion connected to the rod portion of the piston cylinder assembly. A gummer die holder is mounted in overlying relation with the top wall of the body portion and is resiliently urged by spring members radially away from the body portion top wall. The other end of each of the levers is pivotally connected to the gummer die so that the piston cylinder assembly is arranged through the levers to retract the gummer die and move the gummer die toward the applicator assembly body top wall against the force of the spring members. Suitable control means are provided to supply air to the cylinder after a predetermined time delay to thereby retract the gummer die holder and prevent the gummer die holder from transferring adhesive to the back-up rolls. In one embodiment, the spring members are positioned around the bolts that secure the gummer die holder to the body portion and channel-shaped guide members are provided on the gummer die holder that extends around the bolts extending upwardly from the body portion. In another embodiment, the spring members are positioned in aligned spring receiver bores in the top wall of the applicator body portion and the bottom wall of the gummer die holder.

Envelope blanks arranged in overlapped relation with the seal flap portions exposed are conveyed past a seal flap gummer mechanism where a roll applicator continuously applies a liquid gum adhesive to the seal flap portions of the envelope blanks. The overlapped envelope blanks are slightly separated to space the portions of the seal flaps having the wet adhesive thereon to prevent the blanks from adhering to each other. The overlapped and slightly separated envelope blanks are then conveyed by two pairs of endless chains through the drier section of the envelope machine to dry the wet seal flap adhesive. Each pair of endless chains has an upper chain with a conveying section positioned in juxtaposition with the upper conveying section of the lower chain. The pairs of chains are positioned in spaced parallel relation and the respective conveying sections frictionally engage the side flap portions of the envelope blanks therebetween and convey the overlapped blanks through the drier section. The chains have laminated block links connected to adjacent lines by pairs of link plates. Both the link and link plates have a generally planar or flat surface and an upper arcuate surface with raised end portions and a recessed intermediate portion. The chains formed from the link blocks and link plates thus have a generally flat surface and a curved surface with outwardly extending spaced, raised portion. The conveying section the the upper chains have the curved surface with the spaced, raised portions engaging the overlapped envelope blanks and the conveying sections of the lower chains have the flat surface engaging the envelope blanks. The lower chains are coated with a silicone rubber to increase the friction between the envelope blanks and the conveying section of the chains without marking the envelope blanks and preventing the envelope blanks from slipping during transport through the drier section.

THE PATCH CUTTING KNIFE BLADE ON THE VACUUM ROLL SEVERS WINDOW PATCHES FROM A WEB WHEN IT MOVES INTO CUTTING RELATION WITH A FIXED PATCH CUTTING KNIFE BLADE POSITIONED ADJACENT TO THE VACUUM ROLL AS THE VACUUM ROLL ROTATES RELATIVE TO THE FIXED KNIFE BLADE. THE WEB PULL ROLLS ARE DRIVINGLY CONNECTED TO EACH OTHER FOR ROTATION AT SUBSTANTIAL LY THE SAME PERIPHERY SPEED AND ARE SPRING LOADED TO FRICTIONALLY ENGAGE THE PATCH MATERIAL THEREBETWEEN. THE WEB PULL ROLLS ARE CONNECTED TO AND DRIVEN BY A VARIABLE SPEED DRIVE MECHANISM. THE VARIABLE SPEED DRIVE MECHANISM IS IN TURN DRIVINGLY CONNECTED TO A PORTION OF THE ENVELOPE MACHINE AND IS DRIVEN AT MACHINE SPEED IN FIXED RATIO WITH THE MAIN DRIVE SHAFT AND OTHER COMPONENTS OF THE ENVELOPE MACHINE. THE VARIABLE SPEED DRIVE MECHANISM CONTROLS THE PERIPHERAL SPEED OF THE WEB PULL ROLLS AND THUS, CONTROLS THE LENGTH OF THE WINDOW PATCH CUT BY THE PATCH CUTTER KNIFE, BLADES. AN INCREASE IN THE SPEED OF THE WEB PULL ROLLS INCREASES THE LENGTH OF THE PATCH CUT AND CONVERSELY, A DECREASE IN THE SPEED OF THE WEB PULL ROLLS REDUCES THE LENGTH OF THE WINDOW PATCH. THE SPEED OF THE WEB PULL ROLLS CAN BE INCREASED OR DECREASED WHILE THE ENVELOPE MACHINE IS RUNNING. THE VACUUM ROLL IS DRIVEN AT MACHINE SPEED AND THE UNSEVERED END OF THE WINDOW PATCH MATERIAL SLIDES ON THE SURFACE OF THE VACUUM ROLL UNTIL A PORTION IS CUT BY THE CUTTING KNIVES.
