Abstract: Fluid management systems are disclosed that include software-controlled, electro-mechanical devices used in combination with single-use or multi-use tubing sets. Functions of the fluid management systems can include fluid pressurization, fluid warming, fluid deficit monitoring (including flow-based and weight-based), suction, fluid collection, and fluid evacuation (including indirect-to-drain and direct-to-drain options). The systems can be configured based on the surgical environment (e.g., operating room or physician office) as well as other user needs and/or preferences.

Abstract: An instrument for use with a navigation system to treat tissue during a medical procedure, the instrument including a hand-held portion, a rotating cutting accessory, a plurality of actuators, a tracking device and a sleeve. The hand-held portion having a pistol grip shape and configured to be manually supported and moved by a user. The rotating cutting accessory movably coupled to the hand-held portion, and the plurality of actuators operatively are coupled to the rotating cutting accessory for moving the rotating cutting accessory in two degrees of freedom relative to the hand-held portion. The tracking device is built-in and configured for tracking a position and orientation of the instrument. The sleeve at least partially covers the rotating cutting accessory and moves with the rotating cutting accessory in the two degrees of freedom. The rotating cutting accessory is configured to rotate within the sleeve during the medical procedure.

Abstract: An ultrasonic surgical tool system for actuating a handpiece with a tip. The frequency of the drive signal applied to the handpiece drivers is a function of the equivalent of current through the mechanical components of the handpiece and tip and the frequency responsiveness of these components.

Abstract: A communication system involves a medical device that collect data during a surgical or medical procedure and an edge communication device coupled to the medical device. The edge communication device is configured to receive, from a remote management server, a profile that defines control policies for the edge communication device. The control policies include a data collection policy configured to specify a type of the data that the edge communication device is allowed to collect from the medical device and a data communication policy to specify a condition for which the edge communication device is allowed to transmit the collected data to an external server. The edge communication device stores the profile in memory and implements to the control policies such that only the specified type of data is collected and such that the collected data is transmitted to the external server only in response to presence of the condition.

Abstract: A sponge counting system for maintaining an inventory of articles used during a medical or surgical procedure, where, in the event an article for which the status needs to be reconciled is left in a patient, the system generates a record that the article is in a partially reconciled state and when a subsequent procedure is performed, the scanner employed during the procedure has the records of the partially reconciled articles associated with the patient.

Abstract: A system and method for performing a package status check are provided, including a scanner for use in a surgical field and having an antenna for emitting a radio frequency detection field, the scanner including control circuitry configured to determine a predetermined quantity of sponges corresponding to a complete pack of sponges; count a number of sponges associated with the pack with the scanner prior to use of the sponges in a surgical field; and issue an alert when a number of counted sponges does not match the predetermined quantity corresponding to the complete pack. The system and method may include the control circuitry configured to determine whether a sponge has been re-scanned or is unknown by comparing detected information with previously detected information prior.

Abstract: Light-based non-invasive blood pressure measurement systems and methods that include a sensor having a light emitter and a light detector are disclosed. The light emitter emitting coherent or non-coherent light that is transmitted into and reflected from the tissues of the patient, including reflecting from moving blood. The light reflected from the moving blood being having a Doppler shift and detected by the light detector to generate a noninvasive blood pressure signal. The non-invasive blood pressure signal is processed to determine the instantaneous velocity of the blood. Additionally, pulse wave velocity data is obtained nearly, or substantially, simultaneously with the acquisition of the non-invasive blood pressure signal. Using the pulse wave velocity, the instantaneous velocity of the blood and a density of the blood, an instantaneous blood pressure can be determined.

Abstract: A method of operating a waste collection unit including a light assembly separate from a display panel. A vacuum level of the vacuum drawn on a waste canister is measured with a vacuum sensor. The light assembly positioned adjacent a manifold receiver is operated to selectively emit light of a color based on the measured vacuum level. A commanded vacuum level may be received on the display panel, and a colored image indicative of a commanded vacuum level may be displayed on the display panel. The waste collection unit may include plural manifold receivers each configured to receive a manifold. The light assembly that is adjacent the manifold receiver corresponding to the waste canister into which the vacuum is being drawn may be operated to selectively emit light to emit light at different colors or different patterns based on the operating state of the waste collection unit.
