A process for producing 2-mercaptoethylamine hydrohalides of the general formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are identical or different, and each represents a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl group, a hydroxy-substituted lower alkyl group or a phenyl group, and X represents a halogen atom,which comprises reacting a 2-mercaptothiazoline of the general formula ##STR2## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are as defined above, with a 2-halogenoethylamine hydrohalide of the general formula ##STR3## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4 and X are as defined above, in the presence of water.

Catechol derivatives which relate to the production of nerve growth factor in particular tissues of brain are disclosed.Methods for the synthesis, data on the physiological activity, and data on the toxicity of these derivatives as well as examples of preparation for their administration are also disclosed.The disclosed derivatives provide preventive and remedial effect for regressive disorders in the central nervous system including senile dementia of Alzheimer type.

A pharmaceutical composition for the treatment of regressive disorders of the central nervous system treatable by inducing the production and secretion of nerve growth factor, containing as an active ingredient a catechol derivative of the formula ##STR1## where R.sub.6 is a lower alkyl group having 2 to 5 carbon atoms. The catechol derivatives provide preventative and remedial effects for regressive disorders in the central nervous system including senile dementia of the alzheimer type.
