Abstract: A non-contact optical probe for inspecting an inside surface of a cylindrical workpiece includes a laser source that emits an incident light beam, a polarizing beam splitter that transmits one polarization of the incident beam and reflects the opposite polarization, a quarter wave plate that together with the polarizing beam splitter separates back reflected return light from the incident laser beam, a probe tip that directs the incident laser beam onto the cylinder surface and directs reflected light from the surface back to the beam splitter, and at least one detector that receives a portion of the reflected light and generates data about the cylinder surface.

Abstract: This invention relates to a packet scheduler and method therefor and in particular a scheduler for a Code Division Multiple Access cellular mobile communication system. In packet base systems it is important to schedule transmissions of packets carefully in order to maximize the capacity of the system. The scheduler has a selection unit (233) for selecting a candidate set of packets. The candidate set is fed to a processor (235) for calculating transmit powers required by remote terminals to transmit the packets based on the candidate set. The calculated transmit powers are fed to a controller (237) for modifying the candidate set in response to the calculated transmit powers and the modified set is fed to a scheduler unit (239) for scheduling the packets of the candidate set for transmission. The scheduler is in particular appropriate for third generation mobile communication systems.

Abstract: A battery charge management method and device operable to perform that method. The battery charge management method comprises the steps of determining charge delivered to or from a battery based on Coulomb counting and updating an estimated battery state of charge based on the amount of delivered charge and measuring the battery current. Then comparing the updated estimated battery state of charge with a predetermined state of charge value of less than 100%, such that each predetermined state of charge value being associated with an expected battery current for that predetermined state of charge value. The method also includes modifying the updated estimated battery state of charge when the updated estimated state of charge is greater than the predetermined state of charge value and the measured battery current is greater than the expected battery current associated with the predetermined state of charge.
