A bucket tappet is provided for direct-acting valve gear having a body portion formed of a light weight material having a thermal expansion suitable for use in an aluminum engine head. The body of the tappet is formed with a tubular wall, an inner tubular hub and a transverse web joining and supporting the hub within the outer tubular wall. An hydraulic lash adjusting piston/plunger assembly formed of steel is received within the tubular hub. The leakdown control surfaces within the lash adjuster are formed on the mating interfaces between the steel piston and plunger. The body of the tappet has a cam face member formed of hardened material, preferably iron base, received thereover transversely of the outer tubular portion and retained thereon for providing a cam contacting surface. The inner tubular hub has the end adjacent the cam face closed by portions of the body for forming a portion of the hydraulic reservoir in conjunction with a cavity formed in the hydraulic piston. The outer periphery of the light weight body has a hardened surface adapted for wear-resistant sliding contacting with a guide bore formed in the aluminum engine head.

A hydraulic lash adjusting tappet (10) for use in engine valve gear of the direct-acting type having one end of the tappet contacting the end (26) of the combustion chamber valve stem (22) and the other end contacting the camshaft lobe (16). The tappet has a body (34) formed with a tubular wall portion (36) having one end thereof closed by an end wall (38) and with a tubular hub (40) therewithin formed integrally with the end wall and extending axially therefrom. A lash adjuster assembly (44) is slidingly received in the tubular hub which defines a reaction surface (50) remote from the cam face reaction surface (18) defined by the end wall. A seal (88) defines an expansible closed fluid reservoir (114) in combination with the body and includes a compliant diaphragm (90) carried about the outer circumferential portion (92) thereof by said body and a sleeve cap (52) insert-molded within the inner circumferential portion (110) of the diaphragm to provide a central portion (104) wear surface interposed, in application, between the lash adjuster reaction surface and the valve stem. In the preferred embodiment the compliant diaphragm has a plurality of circumferentially spaced accumulators (226, 232) for absorbing by flexure thereof, pressure transients in the reservoir and has stiffening ribs (234, 240) integrally formed between the accumulators.

A hydraulic brake booster is disclosed which is normally actuated by a primary pressure source, but which may be actuated by a secondary pressure source during failure of the primary pressure source. The booster includes a spool valve which controls communication between the primary pressure source and the booster pressure chamber. The spool valve is actuated by a control pressure which is generated by the vehicle operator when a brake application is effected. The control pressure shifts the spool valve to cause the latter to communicate fluid pressure from the primary pressure source into the pressure chamber. A pressure differential responsive piston is responsive to a pressure differential between the control pressure and the pressure communicated into the booster pressure chamber. When the control pressure exceeds the pressure communicated to the booster pressure chamber by some predetermined amount, the differential pressure responsive piston shifts to actuate a valve mechanism to communicate fluid from the secondary pressure source to the booster pressure chamber. Simultaneously, shifting of the differential pressure responsive piston to actuate the valving mechanism also terminates communication between the spool valve and the booster pressure chamber, so that fluid from the secondary pressure source communicated into the booster pressure chamber may not leak through the spool valve.

A hydraulic lash adjusting tappet for an internal combustion engine of the type supplying oil to a passage communicating with the tappet-receiving guide bore in the engine. The tappet has a roller follower on the cam end and a registration means adjacent the opposite end for orienting the roller with respect to the engine cam. The tappet body has at least one localized collector recess disposed longitudinally coincident and peripherally spaced with the registration means. In one embodiment the registration comprises a pair of oppositely disposed flats and the tappet has a pair of diametrically opposed collector recesses interconnected by a peripheral groove spaced longitudinally therefrom to by-pass the flats and provide sufficient surface for leakage control. An oil inlet hole is formed in one of the collector recesses for supplying the lash adjuster valve in the tappet. The localized recess is aligned with the engine supply passage by the orientation of the registration surface.

A hydraulic lash adjuster for valve gear of an internal combustion engine, having a plunger member reservoir chamber with a fluid passageway into the chamber that is substantially lower than the actual vertical height of the chamber and with a reservoir extender means for extending the oil reservoir chamber to a height well above the height of the fluid passageway and a means to precisely meter the flow of oil from the plunger member chamber through a bleed orifice passing through the upper end of the adjuster plunger member with the metering means retained and supported by a reservoir extender means.

A lash adjuster 10 is disclosed for use in engine valve gear. The adjuster includes a body 40 and a plunger 50 is slidably received in a bore 48 formed in body. A piston 63 is slidably received in the plunger and forms a high pressure chamber 86 within the plunger. A one-way valve means 72 is disposed intermediate the piston and plunger for admitting fluid to the chamber for lash adjustment. An annular retaining clip 90 is seated in a locking position in a groove 106 formed in an outer wall 104 of the plunger body. The clip extends radially beyond the end face of the hub bore 48 thereby preventing fall out of the plunger body prior to assembly in the engine valve gear.
