Abstract: A gas sensor suppresses the deterioration of gas tightness caused by failure of a sealing material. The gas sensor includes: a housing; a sensor element arranged inside the housing; a sealing material filling a gap between the sensor element and the housing; an insulation member arranged on a proximal end side of the sealing material; and an annular metal ring arranged on a proximal end side of the insulation member. The sealing material, the insulation member and the metal ring are fixed under pressure by caulking from a proximal end side to a distal. A proximal-end facing surface of an inner peripheral portion of the metal ring is spaced apart from the caulking portion in an opposing region where an inner end of the caulking portion and the metal ring face each other in an opposed manner.

Abstract: A gas sensor includes an inner electrode formed on an inner surface of a base body. Abstract: [Objective] To provide a gas sensor in which a filter member provided in an aerial communication hole adapted to introduce the air for exposing a reference electrode of a detection element to the air is reliably protected through simple configuration.[Means for Solution] A filter member 87 having air permeability and waterproofness is disposed in an aerial communication hole 91 formed in a grommet 9 disposed in a rear end portion 38 of a housing tube 3. The housing tube 3 has a vent portion 34 provided for ensuring aerial communication while protecting the filter member 87. The vent portion 34 is connected, by means of arm portions 33, to an end portion (an opening end 32) of a side wall 39 of the housing tube 3. The side wall 39 surrounds the circumference of the grommet 9. Since the arm portions 33 are disposed in respective grooves 93 of the grommet 9, the grommet 9 is positioned relative to the housing tube 3. Thus, the vent portion 34 formed integral with the housing tube 3 is free from offset, inclination, torsion, etc., relative to the aerial communication hole 91.

Abstract: The oxygen sensor of the present invention has excellent durability capable of effectively preventing contamination with lead or the like for a detection electrode even in low temperature exhaust gases, and having stable response over a long period of time. The contamination preventive layer provided in the sensor device comprises composite powders having coarse powders covered therearound with fine powders, and hollows not filled with fine powders are scattered in gaps among the composite powders. Both the coarse and fine powders comprise ceramic powders. Further, it is particularly preferred that the ceramic powders are powders of a titania powder having a peak at 1 &mgr;m or less and a composite ceramic powder containing alumina such as spinel having a peak at 10 &mgr;m or more. The contamination preventive layer can be formed by coating a slurry containing ceramic powders of different specific surface areas, an organic binder and a solvent such as methanol on the surface of the electrode protection layer followed by drying.

Abstract: A gas sensor element includes a solid electrolyte layer having a plurality of projections formed on its outer surface, an inner electrode formed on the inner surface of the solid electrolyte layer, an outer electrode formed on the outer surface of the solid electrolyte layer, an outer electrode formed on the outer surface of the solid electrolyte layer and a spinel protection layer formed on the outer electrode for protection. The projections are formed on the outer surface of the solid electrolyte layer such that they are formed in a single layer; an area occupied by the projections accounts for 10% to 85% of the outer surface of the solid electrolyte layer and the distance between the neighboring projections is 5 &mgr;m to 300 &mgr;m. Thus, the outer electrode is formed on the solid electrolyte layer in such a manner as to penetrate into pits formed between neighboring projections and is thus strongly bonded to the solid electrolyte layer, thereby improving thermal durability. Also, since pores are hardly formed or are not formed at all between projections, a strong bond is established among the solid electrolyte layer, the outer electrode, and the protection layer, thereby improving durability against high temperature and high humidity.
