A magnetic head includes a gimbal with a head slider attached thereon, a load beam retained on the gimbal, and a mount attached on an end portion of the load beam on a side opposite to a side where the head slider is attached. A fulcrum portion as a center of load of the head slider is set on the gimbal to be shifted from a center of the head slider along its longitudinal direction to a proximal end side of the load beam, namely, toward an air upstream side. To compensate for the imbalance of the floating force due to the shift of the fulcrum portion, there is generated a moment about the fulcrum portion. The moment is provided by assigning an inclination angle to a slider attaching surface of the gimbal. The inclination angle can be adjusted by the height of the projection formed as the fulcrum portion. Moreover, the moment is generated by disposing rails on the head slider such that the width on the air upstream side of each rail is wider than the width on the air downstream side of the rail. This compensates for the variation in the load of the head slider and hence minimizes the change in the quantity of floating distance.

A structure for supporting a magnetic head slider for a linear magnetic disk unit comprises: a magnetic head slider having air bearing rails located opposite to a magnetic disk so as to extend in a direction of a track of the magnetic disk; a gimbal for elastically supporting the magnetic head slider, the gimbal being bonded to a back surface of the magnetic head slider on a side reverse to the air bearing rail; and a support arm having the gimbal secured to its distal end, whose axis extends in a direction perpendicular to the air bearing rail, which support arm gives the magnetic head slider a pressing force toward the magnetic disk. The gimbal includes: a substantially rectangular joining portion to be bonded to the back surface of the magnetic head slider, the joining portion having longer sides extending in a direction perpendicular to the axis of the support arm and shorter sides extending in the axial direction of the support arm; a bridging portion to be bonded to the back face of the magnetic head slider, the bridging portion extending from a middle portion of the lower side of the joining portion on the opposite side to the support arm outwardly in the axial direction of the support arm; flexible portions extending from the bridging portion so as to surround the bridging portion and the joining portion; and a support portion extending from the flexible portions on the opposite side to the bridging portion rearward in the axial direction of the support arm.

The flying head slider flies at a microscopic distance above the recording medium by a pressure produced by a stream of gas resulted from the rotation of the recording medium. Each of the gas bearing rails comprises an inflow portion disposed at an inflow side of the gas stream so as to produce a pressure, an outflow portion disposed at an outflow side of the gas stream so as to produce a pressure, and a connective portion interconnecting the inflow portion and the outflow portion in a common plane. The connective portion serves to suppress an excessive compression of the gas, and achieves good damping characteristics.

An apparatus for supporting and reciprocating a magnetic head slider above a rotating magnetic disk comprises a carrying arm having a free end, a flexible base connected at one end thereof to the free end of the supporting arm, a pair of flexible fingers extending from the other end of the flexible base parallel to an axis of the carrying arm and defining therebetween a space, a traverse bar connecting two free ends of the fingers, and a flexible tongued member on which the magnetic head slider to be mounted, one end of the tongued member being connected to the traverse bar and the other end thereof extending into the space with gaps between the tongued member and the fingers and the base. A reduced part of a minimum cross-section is provided in each of the fingers. The reduced part is located between the one end of the tongued member and a center between the one end of the tongued member and the other end of the base.
