The present invention provides various embodiments for apparatuses and methods of manufacturing low profile housings for electronic and/or optoelectronic devices. Some embodiments provide low profile housings with a hollow casing comprising a first surface, second surface, and at least one lateral side surface. The housing is substantially light-diffusive. At least one cap is provided for sealing an end of the casing, with the at least one cap being sized to account for variations in the casing. At least one light emitting device, such as an LED, may be mounted within the casing. A mounting means may be included for mounting the housing. In another embodiment, a low profile housing with a first casing and second casing surrounding a majority of the first casing may be provided. At least one light emitting device, such as a double-sided printed circuit board with a plurality of LEDs, may be provided in the first casing. One or more end caps may be provided for sealing both the first and second casings while providing a ventilation feature to allow for pressure equalization. Two different wavelengths of light may be emitted from either side of the housing.

A method for bending a perimeter light and a perimeter light for illuminating curved surfaces. One embodiment of a bending method according to the present invention comprises heating a perimeter light to make it pliable. A radius tool is then provided having a curved surface with a shape and radius for the desired bend in the perimeter light. The heated perimeter light is mounted to the radius tool curved surface. The perimeter light is then cooled and removed from the radius tool. One embodiment of a bent elongated perimeter light according to the present invention comprises an array of light sources and an elongated tube bent to match a curve or shape. The array of light sources is disposed within the tube and the tube transmits and disperses the light from the array to give the appearance that said array of light sources is a continuous light source. The array of light sources is cuttable at intervals to shorten the array while allowing the remaining light sources in the array to emit light. The tube is also cuttable to match the length of the array. A system for mounting perimeter lights to body has straight and curved surfaces comprises a plurality of straight and bent elongated perimeter lights that are mountable in a daisy-chain to the straight and curved surfaces.

Apparatus and methods are disclosed that control power supplies to automatically provide the appropriate voltage to drive constant current devices. A lighting system according to the present invention comprises a lighting module having a constant current device that provides a constant current in response to constant current voltage. A power supply is included that generates a power supply voltage coupled to the lighting module. A feedback circuit is included from the lighting module to the power supply causing the power supply voltage to be sufficient to provide a constant current voltage at the LED module. A method according to the present invention for generating a constant current voltage to drive a constant current device, comprises providing a drive voltage to a constant current device. The current at the constant current device is sensed a first time, and the drive voltage is increased. The current to the constant current device is sensed a second time. The drive current is held at its increased level if the current did not increase from the first to the second sensing. The increasing of the drive voltage and sensing of the current is repeated of the current did increase between the first and second sensing.

A system and method is disclosed for illuminating a plurality of emitters such as light emitting diodes (LEDs). The system comprises a plurality of LEDs and a circuit to provide a digital signal. An LED drive circuit is included comprising a first converter for converting the digital signal to one or more analog voltages. The LED drive circuit further comprises a second converter that converts the one or more analog voltages into corresponding one or more drive currents. Each of the drive currents is applied to at least one of the plurality of LEDs to cause the at least one of the plurality of LEDs to emit light. The intensity of emission of the LEDs is related to the level of the applied drive current.

A conductor is included for carrying an electrical signal with the lighting units connected to and interconnected by a conductor. The length of the conductor between the sections can be adjustable to vary the distance between adjacent ones of the sections.
