An objective lens and an optical pickup device utilizing it are disclosed wherein the objective lens includes a specified aspheric surface profile having a discontinuity and a single specified diffraction optical surface so to provide a focusing effect which is usable with different optical recording media, such as a CD versus a DVD. By providing a single diffraction surface and an aspheric surface having a discontinuity, more freedom of design is achieved for the diffraction surface than would otherwise be possible. The objective lens according to the invention is designed so as to be both compact and inexpensive and enables recording/playback onto either type optical recording media using different wavelengths and different numerical apertures, depending on the recording medium used.

A coupling optical system for coupling light into an optical fiber of an optical communications system includes a liquid that includes a dispersion of microscopic particles and two transparent media that hold the liquid between them along an optical axis. The refractive power of the liquid is variable according to the electromagnetic field applied to the liquid to vary the migration of the microscopic particles of the dispersion within the liquid. The position of a light collecting point of the coupling optical system is adjustable based on the variation in the refractive power of the liquid so that light can be efficiently coupled into optical fibers at different distances along the optical axis from the coupling optical system. At the light collecting point, the end surface of an optical fiber collects light from a light source or another optical fiber. One or more collimator lenses may help converge the light.

An objective optical system for focusing light from a light source onto at least two different types of optical recording media having different substrate thicknesses in order to record or reproduce information on the optical recording media includes at least two lens groups arranged along an optical axis for focusing light of each one of two wavelengths that are the same or very nearly the same from the light source on a different one of the at least two different types of optical recording media, such as an AOD and a BD, having different substrate thicknesses. The separations of the two lens groups are different when light of each wavelength is used, and four different types of optical recording media with different substrate thicknesses may be used. An optical pickup device includes the objective optical system, the recording media, and a light source supplying the light of the two wavelengths.

A molding material is heated and pressed plural times when molded is an optical element having a radius of curvature smaller than a radius of a sphere having the same volume as the optical element. When such an optical element is molded, a closed space is formed between a molding material and a transfer surface of a mold in a state where the molding material is placed thereon. Thus, an appearance defect such as a recess is easily generated on the molded optical element. However, since the molding material is molded plural times, it is possible to place the molding materials on the transfer surfaces of the molds after a size of the closed space is adjusted so as not to generate the appearance defect prior to each heating/pressing process. Thereby, it is possible to suppress generation of an appearance defect in the molded optical element.

The working light of the first wavelength is converged at a first numerical aperture onto the first optical recording medium and the working light of the second wavelength is converged at a second numerical aperture onto the second optical recording medium. An aperture adjusting zonal part is included on at least one of the objective lens surfaces for apparently eliminating light at the periphery of a light flux having a wavelength λ1 while maintaining light at the periphery of a light flux having a wavelength λ2, where λ1 is one of the first and second wavelengths and λ2 is the other wavelength. The aperture adjusting zonal part is formed so as to satisfy two conditions.
