    摘要: A variable speed transmission device including a torque variator of the type in which a first rotatable element is in rolling friction engagement with a second nutatable element having an axis movable in a biconical path about the axis of the first element. The first element supports a pair of axially movable cone-like members fixed for rotation with the first element and each having exterior surfaces of revolution defined by a curved generatrix to be convex in axial section and converging away from a point of first and second element axes intersection. The rolling friction surfaces of the second element are defined by interior cylindrical surfaces on a tube-like member and means are provided for adjusting the angle of the second element axis with respect to the first to vary the radii at the point of frictional contact on the cone-like members. A third element rotatable on the first axis extends through the tube-like second member and is cut away to enable the frictional engagement of surfaces on the cone-like members with the internal surfaces of the second element. The third element carries adjustably eccentric journals having fluid control means operable in diammetrically opposite directions to vary the angle at which the axis of the second element intersects the axis of the first element. Input torque is preferably provided by a clutch to the third element whereas the variable speed output of the variator is transmitted through a multi-speed shiftable gear train.

    摘要: A variable stroke piston engine in which power developed by piston reciprocation is transmitted to a cylindrical nutating member journaled on its exterior to a rotatable support connected to a second shaft concentric with the first shaft, the nutating member having an internal surface in frictional engagement with a pair of oppositely convergent cone-like members keyed for rotation with the first shaft. The nutating member is disposed on an axis inclined with respect to the axis of the first shaft at an angle which may be adjusted to vary simultaneously piston stroke distance and rotational speed of the first shaft without changing the rotational speed of the second shaft for a given frequency of piston reciprocation. The first and second shafts are connected respectively to each of two inputs of an epicyclic gear train having an output planet gear carrier connected to an engine output shaft. The geometry of the engine enables operation by which output shaft speed varies inversely with piston stroke length or engine displacement.

    摘要: An expansible chamber energy conversion machine having a frame, a torque transmitting member supported by the frame for rotation about a first axis, a nutatable member having journal surfaces concentric with a second axis intersecting the first axis at an angle to establish a point of axes intersection, support means rotatable on the first axis and rotatably supporting the nutatable member for movement of the second axis in a biconical path about the first axis with the apex of the biconical path coincident with the point of axes intersection, one or more pistons reciprocable through a stroke distance in working fluid chambers having end faces fixed relative to the frame and adjustable linkage assemblies for connecting the pistons with the nutating member. The nutatable member is supported by the support means by way of a journal member arranged to change the angle of first and second axes intersection upon axial movement of the journal member relative to the support member. Static control means is provided for adjustably positioning the fulcrum point of a double-ended swivel link in a manner to shift the nutating member axially and thus change the nutational throw of the nutatable member in a manner to vary the stroke distance of piston reciprocation and maintain proper compression ratio. The nutatable member is driven by the pistons in a manner to convert piston reciprocation to rotary movement of the torque transmitting member.

    摘要: A variable speed transmission device of the type in which a first rotatable element is in rolling friction engagement with a second nutatable element having an axis movable in a biconical path about the axis of the first elements. The first element supports a pair of axially movable cone-like members fixed for rotation with the first element and each having exterior surfaces of revolution defined by a curved generatrix to be convex in axial section and converging away from the point of first and second element axes intersection. The rolling friction surfaces of the second element are defined by an interior cylindrical surfaces and means are provided for adjusting the angle of the second element axis with respect to the first to vary the radii at the point of frictional contact on the cone-like members. Angular adjustment of the second element axis with respect to the axis of the first element is effected by an eccentric sleeve-like member carrying the second element in a support member rotatable about the axis of the first element. Input torque is preferably provided by a clutch to the support member whereas the variable speed output is desirably transmitted through a multi-speed gear transmission.
