Abstract: A variable compression ratio device configured to be incorporated into an internal combustion engine. The internal combustion engine including one or more cylinders housing pistons that are coupled to a crankshaft. The variable compression ratio device including rotation coupler assemblies formed by gears that have internal and external teeth that are disposed at distal ends of the crankshaft to cause the crankshaft to rotate, and two or more eccentrics configured to cause translation variations of the crankshaft. Where the two or more eccentrics are positioned on trunnions of the crankshaft before and after each connecting rod and respective balances, the translation variations are to be converted into rotation and transmitted to a toothed gear and to a flange of a flywheel, and the two or more eccentrics are aligned with corresponding gears to cause changes in translation of a position of the crankshaft.

Abstract: Methods and systems for optimizing fuel economy and maintaining particulate emissions below a threshold of an engine system in a vehicle. An engine system has port fuel injection, direct injection, variable compression ratio, and independent compression/expansion. A processor predicts settings for the four systems that optimize for a fuel economy that is maximized. A particulate rate of the engine system is computed based on the settings. A determination is made of whether the particulate rate is below a threshold. When the particulate rate is below the threshold, command signals are delivered to actuators of the systems to move to the settings. When the threshold is exceeded, the settings are revised to maintain the particulate below the threshold while optimizing for fuel economy.

Abstract: A four stroke internal combustion engine with dedicated exhaust gas recirculation and method of operating such engine, wherein the engine comprises a plurality of combustion cylinders including main cylinders and a dedicated exhaust gas recirculation cylinder, wherein each cylinder includes a piston; a crankshaft, which is rotatable in a direction, and defines a main crankshaft axis, and includes a plurality of crankpins. Each of the crankpins is coupled to at least one of the pistons. The crankpins affixed to the pistons of the main cylinders are spaced at an interval around the main crankshaft axis. The crankpin affixed to the piston of the dedicated exhaust gas recirculation cylinder is spaced at an offset of 5 to 50 degrees from the interval in either direction relative to the direction of crankshaft rotation.

Abstract: An improved reciprocating internal combustion engine converts a larger percentage (than a conventional engine) of the linear force exerted by the piston into rotation of the crankshaft when the combustion pressures are at maximum, high or intermediate levels. This increased conversion results in more power per cycle, when compared to conventional engines of comparable size. The improved engine includes an engine block, a cylinder within the engine block, a piston slidably positioned within the cylinder for a reciprocating motion, a crankshaft, a connecting rod and a torque arm. One side of the connecting rod is pivotally mounted to the piston and on the other side to the torque arm. The torque arm is also operatively rigidly connected to a template that is mounted to the engine block. The template guides the movement of the torque arm along a predetermined path. The template is configured to position the torque arm at an angle with respect to the radius of the crankshaft at the pivot point such that the combined value of vectors that contribute to turning the crankshaft are significantly larger than that of the turning vectors in a conventional engine, when the combustion pressure in the cylinder is at the maximum high or intermediate levels.

The control system is configured to interrupt the repetitive cycles by rotating the crankshaft an additional single revolution between two successive combustion strokes for switching between a high and low compression ratio.

Abstract: A fuel cut during deceleration is executed at time point t1. An oxygen storage amount (rOS) which increases with this fuel cut is estimated based on an exhaust air-fuel ratio and an intake air quantity. When the oxygen storage amount (rOS) reaches a threshold value (at time point t2), a target compression ratio (tCR) is corrected to become lower than a basic target compression ratio (tCR). Although a fuel recovery is executed at time point t4, a combustion temperature is lowered because of the lowering of the mechanical compression ratio, so that a production of NOx in a combustion chamber is suppressed. Therefore, worsening of NOx is suppressed even if the oxygen storage amount (rOS) of exhaust-emission purification catalyst (4) is excessive.

Abstract: A device for changing a compression ratio of a cylinder unit of a reciprocating piston internal combustion engine has an eccentric bushing which is rotatably arranged in a bore of a connecting rod eye. Said eye encloses a crank pin of a crankshaft, and the bushing is rotatably guided in the bore and can be locked via locking openings, which are arranged to be offset from each other by preferably approximately 180°. The connecting rod has a locking apparatus which interacts optionally with the locking openings and via which the eccentric bushing can only ever be transferred from one position to the next. The locking apparatus has a sliding guideway extending parallel to the longitudinal axis of the bore of the connecting rod bearing eye. The sliding guide interacts with actuating pins arranged in the locking openings and can be displaced radially with respect to the bushing.
