A new class of dyestuffs that contains a carbamate structure to which there is attached an N-hydroxymethyl group has been prepared. These new dyestuffs were prepared through combination of certain dyestuffs with the hydroxyl group of hydroxyalkyl carbamates. Methylolation of the carbamate moiety renders the dyestuffs reactive under acidic conditions to cellulosic and other textile materials containing reactive hydrogens.

Improved catalyst systems have been found that can be used in place of the strong mineral acid catalysts previously required in the mild cure finishing process for cellulosic textiles. These improved catalyst systems consist of mixtures of ammonium chloride and an acid selected from the group, phosphoric acid, citric acid, oxalic acid, tartaric acid, and trichloroacetic acid. Unlike cellulosic fabrics treated by the mild cure finishing process with strong mineral acid catalysis, fabrics similarly processed with the improved catalyst systems need not be neutralized and washed immediately after curing to prevent strength loss during subsequent storage. The wrinkle resistant fabric thus produced may be used as a precured product or may be additionally processed to impart shape and creases by a combination of steam pressing and dry pressing.

Superheated steam is utilized both to dry and remove free formaldehyde in a combined operation from textiles suitably impregnated with finishing agent and catalyst, thereby to produce a sensitized fabric with a formaldehyde odor which is imperceptible to response of the olfactory capacity of humans. The sensitized fabric of this invention can be used in the conventional post-cure process to yield durable press products.

THE FREE FORMALDEHYDE CONTENT OF A SOLUTION OF METHYLOLATED CARBAMATE FINISHING AGENT IS REDUCED BY REMOVAL OF FREE FORMALDEHYDE THROUGH REACTION WITH PHTHALIMIDE TO GIVE AN INSOLUBLE PHTHALIMIDE-FORMALDEHYDE ADDUCT THAT IS READILY SEPARATED FROM THE SOLUTION. FABRIC SENSITIZED BY TREATMENT WITH THE SP-MODIFIED SOLUTION HAS A LOW LEVEL OF FORMALDEHYDE RELEASE. WHEN THE SENSITIZED FABRIC IS CURED, THE RESULTANT FABRIC IS WRINKLE RESISTANT AND EXHIBITS ALL THE OTHER PROPERTIES CHARACTERISTIC OF THE CARBAMATE FINISH.
