Abstract: Disclosed are systems and methods for performing adaptive equalization operations to reduce variations in the frequency response of audio signals at the eardrum of a wearer of an earphone. The assumption that the frequency response of the error microphone matches the frequency response at the eardrum may not be true due to signal leakage effects and the shape of the ear canal. Techniques are disclosed for the adaptive equalization operations to perform a calibration algorithm to compensate for the effects of the signal leakage and the shape of the ear canal. The earphone may estimate the transfer function from the speaker to the error microphone and may estimate the load impedance from the earphone based on a calibrated relationship between the transfer function and the load impedance. The adaptive equalization may use a calibration algorithm to adjust the frequency response at the error microphone to match that at the eardrum.

Abstract: A method performed by a headset that includes a speaker and an in-ear microphone, the method includes performing a calibration on the headset to obtain a baseline measurement; using, while the headset is being worn by a user, an audio signal to drive the speaker that is arranged to project sound into a canal of a user's ear; capturing as a microphone signal, from the in-ear microphone of the headset, sound from within the canal of the user's ear; determining a parameter associated with the user's ear based at least on the captured microphone signal and the baseline measurement; and transmitting a notification related to one or more characteristics of one or more hearing elements of the user's ear based on the parameter.

Abstract: A portable acoustic device comprising: a device housing that defines an internal cavity, the device housing comprising a speaker housing portion and a stem portion extending away from the speaker housing portion; a first acoustic port formed through a wall of the speaker housing; an audio driver disposed within the speaker housing portion and aligned to emit sound through the acoustic first port; a battery disposed within the speaker housing portion and positioned an opposite side of the audio driver than the acoustic port; an antenna disposed in the stem; a user input region disposed along the stem; and a system in a chip disposed in the stem, the system in a chip comprising: a processor that controls operation of the portable wireless acoustic device, charging circuitry, an accelerometer, a wireless communication controller, support components for the antenna and support components for the user input region.
