Abstract: Sensing apparatus includes a radiation source, which emits pulses of optical radiation toward multiple points in a target scene. A receiver receives the optical radiation that is reflected from the target scene and outputs signals that are indicative of respective times of flight of the pulses to and from the points in the target scene. Processing and control circuitry selects a first pulse repetition interval (PRI) and a second PRI, greater than the first PRI, from a permitted range of PRIs, drives the radiation source to emit a first sequence of the pulses at the first PRI and a second sequence of the pulses at a second PRI, and processes the signals output in response to both the first and second sequences of the pulses in order to compute respective depth coordinates of the points in the target scene.

Abstract: Apparatus for optical sensing includes first matrix of optical sensing elements, arranged on a semiconductor substrate in rows and columns. A second matrix of storage nodes is arranged on the substrate such that respective first and second storage nodes in the second matrix are disposed in proximity to each of the sensing elements within the first matrix. Switching circuitry couples each of the sensing elements to transfer photocharge to the respective first and second storage nodes. Control circuitry controls the switching circuitry in a depth sensing mode such that over a series of detection cycles, each of the sensing elements and a first neighboring sensing element are connected together to the respective first storage node during the first detection interval, and each of the sensing elements and the second neighboring sensing element are connected together to the respective second storage node during the second detection interval.

Abstract: Optical apparatus includes a projector, which directs a sequence of pulses of radiation toward a scene so as to form one or more lines of the radiation on the scene. A receiver includes an array of single-photon detectors, which output, in response to the radiation that is incident thereon, signals indicative of a time-of-flight of the pulses from the projector to the receiver via the points in the scene, and collection optics, which form an image the scene on the array, including the one or more lines of the radiation, such that each single-photon detector receives the radiation reflected from a corresponding point in the scene. A processor receives the signals output by the sensing elements, and derives depth coordinates of the points in the scene from both the time-of-flight of the pulses and triangulation of the one or more lines in the image.

Abstract: An optical sensing device includes a light source, which is configured to emit one or more beams of light pulses at respective angles toward a target scene. An array of sensing elements is configured to output signals in response to incidence of photons on the sensing elements. Light collection optics are configured to image the target scene onto the array. Control circuitry is coupled to actuate the sensing elements only in one or more selected regions of the array, each selected region containing a respective set of the sensing elements in a part of the array onto which the light collection optics image a corresponding area of the target scene that is illuminated by the one of the beams, and to adjust a membership of the respective set responsively to a distance of the corresponding area from the device.

Abstract: The sensitivity of one or more single-photon avalanche diodes (SPAD) in a SPAD detector is modulated over time. The sensitivity of all of the SPADs may be modulated, or the sensitivity of one section of the SPADs can be modulated differently from another section of the SPADs. Various techniques for modulating the sensitivity are disclosed.

Abstract: Depth sensing apparatus includes a radiation source, including a first array of emitters arranged in multiple banks, which are configured to emit a first plurality of pulsed beams of optical radiation toward a target scene. A second plurality of sensing elements are arranged in a second array and are configured to output signals indicative of respective times of incidence of photons on the sensing elements, wherein the second plurality exceeds the first plurality. Objective optics form an image of the target scene on the array of sensing elements. Processing and control circuitry actuates the multiple banks in alternation and identifies, responsively to the output signals, areas of the second array on which the pulses of optical radiation reflected from corresponding regions of the target scene are incident.

Abstract: Range sensing apparatus includes a transmitter including an array of emitters configured to emit respective beams of coherent optical radiation and switching circuitry coupled to the emitters. An optical assembly is configured to divide each beam of the coherent optical radiation into a transmitted beam and a local beam, to project the local beam toward an optical detector, to project the transmitted beam toward a respective location on a target, and to direct optical radiation reflected from the respective location onto the optical detector so as to interfere optically with the local beam. A controller is coupled to apply amplitude-chirped electrical drive pulses to the transmitter while controlling the switching circuitry to temporally multiplex the electrical drive pulses among the emitters, and to receive and process electrical beat signals output by the optical detector in response to interference between the reflected optical radiation and the local beam.
