    Abstract: Techniques and solutions are provided for calculating reachability matrices for multi-stage networks using matrix operations. For example, link status information can be obtained for network devices of the multi-stage network. Using the link status information, binary link state matrices can be determined representing connectivity between the stages of the multi-stage network. Binary reachability matrices can then be calculated using the binary link state matrices. The binary reachability matrices can be used in deciding where to forward network packets for destination devices.

    Abstract: Network links are exercised by transmitting network frames across the links at a threshold level of network traffic by filling unutilized bandwidth with test frames. By increasing network traffic across the links, errors are increased and easier to detect. The test frames can be given lower priority than customer traffic so as not to impact the test traffic. The test frames can be designed such that they are dropped upon receipt by another network switch.

For example, link status information can be obtained for network devices of the multi-stage network. Using the link status information, link state matrices can be determined representing bandwidth and connectivity between network devices of adjacent stages of the multi-stage network. Bandwidth matrices can then be calculated using the link state matrices. The bandwidth matrices represent how network traffic is distributed to destination devices.
