    Abstract: A detection system includes a radar-unit and a controller-circuit. The radar-unit is configured to detect objects proximate a host-vehicle.     Abstract: Techniques and apparatuses are described that implement lateral-bin monitoring for radar target detection. In particular, a radar system, which is mounted to a moving platform, divides a region of interest that is associated with at least one side of the moving platform into multiple lateral bins. The radar system maps locations of detections to the lateral bins, and monitors respective quantities of consecutive frames in which detections occur within the lateral bins. The radar system determines that at least one object is present within one of the lateral bins responsive to a quantity of consecutive frames having detections within the lateral bin being equal to or greater than a threshold. By waiting for a lateral bin to have detections across multiple consecutive frames, the radar system can minimize the false-alarm rate without reducing sensitivity.

    Abstract: The techniques and systems herein enable ghost object detection. Specifically, a reflection line indicative of a potential reflection surface between first and second moving objects is determined. If enough stationary objects are within an area of the reflection line, it is determined whether one or more of the stationary objects within the area are within a distance of a reflection point. An expected velocity of the second object is then determined and checked against a velocity of the second object. If the expected velocity is near the velocity, it is determined that the second object is a ghost object. By doing so, the system can effectively identify ghost objects in a wide variety of environments, thereby allowing for downstream operations to function as designed.

    Abstract: A detection system includes a ranging sensor and a controller circuit. The ranging sensor is configured to detect range rates of objects proximate a host vehicle. The controller circuit is in communication with the ranging sensor. The controller circuit is configured to determine a search area extending from the host vehicle. The controller circuit is further configured to determine a first histogram comprising counts of occurrences of the range rates detected within the search area. The controller circuit is further configured to determine a second histogram comprising the counts of occurrences of a portion of the range rates detected within the search area. The controller circuit is further configured to determine that a trailer is being towed by the host vehicle based on the first histogram and the second histogram.

In an aspect, the controller circuit is configured to perform a first detection count of the detected objects, determine a first group of objects of the detected objects, determine a first distance to the first group of objects, utilize the first distance to determine a trailer distance between the host vehicle and a front of a trailer, determine a second group of objects of the detected objects, determine a second distance to the second group of objects, utilize the second distance to determine an axle distance between the front of the trailer and a trailer axle, and determine a trailer length based on the trailer distance and the axle distance.
