Patches are printed using a screening algorithm and incorporating at least one output appearance factor. A calibration file is generated from measured color values of the printed patches mapping a color space for the printed patches to a color space of a printer used to print the patches. Information is associated with the calibration file indicating the printer and at least one output appearance attribute for use in selecting one calibration file to use when printing a print job.

Systems and methods are provided for test patterns that detect misalignment. One embodiment is a printer that includes a marking engine having rows of nozzles. The rows are separated along a Y direction, and each row of nozzles extends in an X direction. The printer also includes a controller that directs the marking engine to print multiple bands of a test pattern. Each band is printed by selecting nozzles in a first row, selecting nozzles in a second row that occupy adjacent X positions to the selected nozzles of the first row, and forming a band having multiple marks. Each mark includes a continuous line from a nozzle in the first row and a continuous line from a nozzle in the second row. Each band of the test pattern is printed by ejecting ink from nozzles in a different combination of nozzles.

The system further includes an ink output estimator to estimate an ink output amount ejected from the printhead based on an estimated quantity of the ejected drops of ink of the ink drop type and an estimated size of the drop type, and an ink measurement device to measure an ink input amount provided by the ink input supply to the printhead. The system also includes a correction module to adjust the estimated size of the drop type based on the ink output amount and the ink input amount for a printing operation.
