For excess air in the region of the flock-laying device is to be sucked away in a simple fashion without adversely affecting the process of shaping the absorbent pad, the feed conduit feeding the flock-air mixture to the carrier is branched into at least first and second conduits, the first conduit carrying a first partial flow of the mixture and the second conduit carrying a second partial flow thereof. The first and second conduits are directed on to the carrier in such a way that the second partial flow meets the carrier substantially downstream of the first partial flow in the direction of operation of the carrier.

In an apparatus and a process for preparing a flock-air mixture which is fed by a pulping device through a feed conduit to a flock-laying device for forming an absorbent pad, the feed conduit includes a dispersing device for loosening up lumps of flock within the mixture. To achieve a high level of efficiency in loosening the flock lumps, as independently as possible of the through-put of the mixture through the feed conduit, the dispersing device is in the form of a pneumatic dispersing device which loosens up the lumps by accelerating the mixture with lumps therein to cause the lumps to burst or tear apart.

The present invention relates to the insert for the drum of a device for producing shaped pads from fibrous material. These inserts are attached to a disk of the drum and are designed in accordance with the shape and size of the pads to be produced. To simplify the retrofittability of the device or the drum for the production of pads of another size or shape and the number of drum inserts which must be kept in stock, it is provided that the drum insert consists of a base body, which, in turn, consists of a supporting sheet having several openings and several laminar sheets disposed in the direction of rotation of the drum and at right angles thereto. A forming insert is also provided at the outer side of the drum insert, which consists of a sieve and a sieve frame receiving it and that forming webs are provided in the drum insert which are located vertically above the laminar sheets extending transversely to the direction of rotation of the drum, whose shape is adapted to the shape of the sieve and thus to the shape of the pads to be produced in such fashion that the sieve retains its shape, even if it is loaded by the negative pressure.

Absorbent flakes or particles are transported from a source to a pad form device by an air flow passing the flakes or particles through a conduit between the source and the pad forming device. In order to supply a homogenous flake flow to the pad forming device, baffle devices or at least one baffle device is arranged in the conduit. The baffle device or baffle devices are equipped with baffling rods arranged in a certain position within the baffling device housing so that the flake air mixture must flow through the spaces between neighboring baffling rods to assure a dissolution of any flake accumulations or clumps. Preferably, a cross-section flow area reducer is arranged upstream of each baffling device to increase the flow speed or velocity of the flow entering the respective baffling device.
