Abstract: An improved process for the manufacture of N-monosubstituted carboxylic acid amides in which the substituent is bonded to the nitrogen via a non-aromatic tertiary carbon atom, by reaction of tertiary alcohols or olefinically unsaturated compounds in which one carbon atom forming part of the olefinic double bond is a tertiary carbon atom, with nitriles or hydrogen cyanide in the presence of acid condensation agents at temperatures of 0* to 130*C, the improvement being that formic acid is used as the condensation agent. The carboxylic acid amides manufactured in this way can be used for conversion to amines which are less readily obtainable and which serve as starting substances for plant protection agents.
