Abstract: A downhole sensor apparatus may include a structure securing a circuit board. The structure may be configured to be inserted into a recess in a tool on a drill string. The downhole sensor apparatus may include one or more sensors coupled to the circuit board and a cap over the structure. The downhole sensor apparatus may further include a data port electrically coupled to the circuit board and configured to transmit data from the sensors to an external device. The downhole sensor apparatus may include a threaded element configured to thread into complementary threads in the recess in the tool. The downhole sensor apparatus may be configured to operate in an idle condition. The downhole sensor apparatus may compare readings from at least two sensors to threshold downhole conditions and begin normal operation when the readings from the at least two sensors meet or exceed the threshold downhole conditions.

Abstract: An earth-boring tool includes a nozzle port extending from an external surface to an internal fluid plenum of a tool body. A fluid inlet sleeve is disposed within the nozzle port of the tool body. The fluid inlet sleeve includes a hollow cylinder having a longitudinal end oriented within the internal fluid plenum. The longitudinal end of the fluid inlet sleeve includes one surface oriented at an angle within a range from greater than 0 degrees to about 90 degrees relative to a plane to which a longitudinal axis of the fluid inlet sleeve is normal.

Abstract: A method of manufacturing an earth boring tool body including the following steps: providing a mold, the mold comprising a mold cavity defining an interior surface corresponding to an exterior shape of a tool body and a plurality of blades. Forming at least one barrier sleeve insert and disposing it adjacent the interior surface defining the mold cavity; disposing a first powder in the gap between the insert and the interior surface, disposing a second powder in the mold cavity; disposing an infiltrant material adjacent the powders; and heating the mold, thereby infiltrating the infiltrant material into the powders to form the tool body. The disclosure also includes a mold for manufacturing an earth boring tool, the mold comprising a mold cavity defining interior surfaces corresponding to an exterior shape of the tool body and the plurality of blades. Barrier sleeve inserts and/or containment sleeve inserts may be disposed adjacent interior surfaces the mold cavity.

Abstract: Methods of forming earth-boring tools including one or more instrumented cutting elements may involve placing a cutting element partially within a pocket extending into a body of an earth-boring tool. The cutting element may include a first hole extending partially through a cutting element from a back side of the cutting element toward a cutting face and a second, shorter, wider hole extending partially through the cutting element from the back side toward the cutting face. The second hole may be in fluid communication with the first hole. An extension including a passageway extending through the extension may be located at least partially within the second hole, such that the passageway may be in fluid communication with the first hole. A thermocouple may be inserted through the passageway and into the first hole after affixing the cutting element in the pocket.
