A method of producing images includes forming an electrostatic latent image on a primary image forming member. A toner image is developed on the primary image forming member using a developer comprising dry toner particles having a mean volume weighted diameter D between 5 .mu.m and 10 .mu.m. The toner particles contain particulate addenda in a concentration range between (3.2/D)% and (5.6/D)%. The toner image is electrostatically transferred from the primary image forming member to an intermediate transfer member having a compliant layer, and then electrostatically transferred from the intermediate transfer member to a receiver.

A method of forming a toner image on a receiving sheet includes a step of either transferring or fixing a toner image to the receiving sheet, in which the receiving sheet is heated to a temperature of at least 100.degree. C. To allow steam to escape from the receiving sheet, a gas impermeable layer on the side of the sheet opposite the toner image is made permeable by application of small, closely spaced holes in the layer. The method is particularly usable with a receiving sheet having a heat-softenable layer which is heated beyond its softening point to facilitate transfer of images made up of very small toner particles. The holes are preferably mechanically punched in a curl-preventing layer on the opposite side of the sheet.

The component color toners are each surface treated with a blend of two or more types of silica particles, which differ in the functional groups appended to them. The silica blend for each component color toner is chosen so that, when the component color toners are mixed together to form the custom color mixture, they will all tribocharge to the same charge-to-mass ratio when mixed with a carrier to form a developer.

A process for adhering surface treatment to toner resin core particles includes: providing resin core particles including a binder polymer having a Tg and having outer surfaces; providing surface treatment including at least first metal oxide particles having an average particle size of greater than 25 nm and a surface energy of less than or equal to 28 erg/cm2, as determined by methanol wettability midpoint at 22° C., and tacking the at least first metal oxide particles to the resin core particles by mixing at a temperature greater than the Tg of the binder polymer. Preferably, the surface treatment is tacked to the outer surfaces of the resin core particles at a concentration to provide a total projected area of the first metal oxide particles sufficient to cover at least 10% of the resin core particle outer surfaces area. Use of the surface treated toner compositions obtained by such process in a developer for developing electrostatic images, the developer comprising magnetic carrier particles and surface treated toner, wherein the developer comprises less than 0.013 g non-tacked surface treatment per square meter of resin core particles outer surface, that is free to transfer between the outer surface of the resin core particles and outer surfaces of the magnetic carrier particles.

A process is provided for increasing the electrostatic transfer efficiency of toner powder from an element to a receiver sheet. The method involves conducting such transfer in the presence of at least one fluorinated onium salt wherein either one or both of the cationic portion and the anionic portion thereof contain a fluorinated hydrocarbon group.
