The tags imprint a unique electric signature into a local ingress noise, making the noise identifiable at the headend of the network. In one embodiment, tags do not require external control signals to operate, the electrical response of the tags being determined by present and/or past magnitudes of the return path signal. Advantageously, such tags can be made entirely passive, not requiring a control signal or an external source of electrical power.

The present invention provides a test device and a method enabling automatic detection of an imbalance in a power level of a digital channel. The test device includes an attenuator, a tuner, a demodulator, and an evaluation unit. According to the method, a plurality of channels are attenuated at a plurality of attenuation levels, by means of the attenuator. A digital channel is selected from the plurality of channels, by means of the tuner. A modulation error ratio (MER) of the digital channel is measured at the plurality of attenuation levels, by means of the demodulator. A variation of the MER of the digital channel with attenuation level is then evaluated, by means of the evaluation unit, to detect an imbalance in a power level of the digital channel.

The steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR), a mitochondrial protein required for stress responses, reproduction, and sexual differentiation of male fetuses is shown to exert its activity transiently at the outer mitochondrial membrane (OMM) rather than in its final resting place in the matrix, and that its OMM residency time and activity are regulated by its speed of mitochondrial import. This may be the first example of a mitochondrial protein exerting its biological activity in a compartment other than that to which it is finally targeted. This unique system which permits steroidogenic cells to initiate and terminate massive levels of steroidogenesis within a few minutes, permitting the rapid regulation of serum steroid hormone concentrations therefore can be manipulated by altering the binding of the leader sequence for the StAR protein to its receptor on the OMM.

A method and apparatus for compensating displacements of a machine point due to temperature changes, such as the temperature-related displacement of a work spindle axis of a milling machine relative to a machine reference point. The measurement values of the intended positioning of the work spindle axis are determined by means of a position measuring device which includes at least one first sensing device for sensing a measuring scale. A second sensing device connected to a housing of the work spindle through a push rod of a material having a small coefficient of expansion is used to directly determine the temperature-related displacement with respect to direction and magnitude. The determined value is computed into the measurement value of the intended position by means of an analyzing unit. The result is a compensation of the temperature-related displacement of the work spindle axis.

A test system measures the signal quality in the upstream path and in dependence upon a noise level being above a predetermined limit, polls a plurality of terminal equipment devices to return a downstream signal quality measurement. The test instrument analyzes the downstream signal quality measurements to locate an ingress source contributing to the noise.
