Between the different tool parts, there is a clear interface in the material composition, but an intermingled transitional zone (19) of different material compositions is possible. In a method of manufacturing the tool, or a part thereof, casting material of at least two different material compositions is supplied to different parts (7, 8, 9, respectively) of the tool. The casting materials are kept separate and discrete from one another and, after the casting, there is thus obtained a tool possessing different material properties in different parts (7, 8; 9) of the tool.

The steel portion forms the working component of the tool, for example a cutting edge, and the grey iron portion forms the body component of the tool. The QAM receiver (100) establishes a first value associated to a quality of the I component samples, and a second value associated to a quality of the Q component samples, and compares the first value and second value to determine if the sampling timing should be advanced or delayed to improve the sample quality. The QAM receiver (100) adjusts subsequent sampling by advancing or delaying a sampling timing based on the comparison.

The steel is cast first from beneath and upwards, whereafter a pause is made. The casting of the grey iron is only carried out when the temperature of the steel in the intended interconnection zone has fallen to a temperature corresponding to the liquidus temperature of the steel minus approx. 30° to 150° C.
