The system includes a transport vehicle including a cargo bay capable of housing a plurality of cargo containers, and a loading dock for coupling to the cargo bay. The system also includes at least one railcar and pylons positioned along a floor of the cargo bay. A predetermined number of pylons are operable to elevate and lower a cargo container within the cargo bay. The present invention also provides a railcar for transporting cargo containers, as well as an apparatus for positioning at least one cargo container within a transport vehicle. The present invention also provides a system for aligning a loading dock and a transport vehicle that includes a mechanism for adjusting the height of the transport vehicle or loading dock, or a plurality of engagement members that are capable of aligning the loading dock and transport vehicle.

A variable sweep winglet with a negative dihedral angle is provided for a ground effect vehicle. The winglet is positionable at a sweep angle to control the winglet tip clearance from ground. Variable winglet tip clearance reduces the risk of damage or instability due to collision with the ground or water, thereby permitting more efficient flight at lower altitude with an equivalent safety. The winglet is generally positioned by an actuator. The actuator is controlled by a flight control system, or by other manual or automatic systems. A sensor may also be included for determining whether an object lies in the path of the winglet. The sensor communicates with the flight control system in order to vary the sweep of the winglet to increase clearance from the ground or water, thus avoiding impact with the object.

An altitude measuring system and method for aircraft is provided. The altitude measuring system includes altitude sensors for providing data to an altitude processing unit. The altitude processing unit spatially averages each output to determine a mean altitude. Pitch and roll are accounted for by correction. A method of determining aircraft altitude from a plurality of altitude sensors includes receiving altitude sensor data from each sensor and spatially averaging the altitude sensor outputs to determine aircraft altitude. A method of estimating the maximum height of an ocean surface includes receiving a plurality of altitude sensor data and determining a mathematical description of the ocean surface from the sensor data. The maximum probable wave height of the ocean surface is estimated from the mathematical description. From the maximum wave height, a cruise altitude may be determined.

This is generally accomplished via input from wind sensors and a navigation system.
