Abstract: A process for preparing a low ash detergent is described. The process involves mixing a surfactant composition that includes a hydroxybenzoate, sulfonate, or phosphonate detergent with an ashless nitrogen-containing compound to boost the base number of the hydroxybenzoate, sulfonate or phosphonate detergent.
