Abstract: Optical systems that employ concentric multi core fibers (MCFs) are discussed. Some of the systems discussed are based on the use of a concentric MCF that has a single mode core, capable of carrying a broadband data signal, and a multimode core, which carries optical signals that do not require as high a bandwidth as the broadband data signal. In one embodiment, the multimode core carries system management data. In another embodiment, the multimode core carries a high power optical signal that provides remote power. In another embodiment, the multimode core carries a pump signal for a downstream fiber amplifier. In yet another embodiment, the multimode core carries an optical signal, for example visible light, that can be used to verify connectivity.

The MDM optical signal is transmitted into a second multimode fiber from the first multimode optical fiber. The first and second multimode fibers are coupled via a fiber connector. Abstract: The invention is directed to the characterization of an optical channel, such as an optical fiber, in an optical network. The method includes calibrating a transmitter by measuring its transmitter and dispersion eye closure (TDEC, in the case of non-return to zero optical (NRZ) optical systems or transmitter and dispersion eye closure quaternary (TDECQ, in the case of 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) optical systems). That calibrated transmitter is used to characterize the optical channel being tested by providing a measure of its stressed eye closure (SEC) or stressed eye closure quaternary (SECQ). A loss deficit for the optical channel can be calculated by subtracting the SEC or SECQ value from the maximum TDEC or TDECQ value.
