Abstract: The outer ratchet wheel is a part of the timing cam drum of a step-by-step type of interval timer. The outer ratchet is advanced by means of a pawl which is reciprocated as the slow rise fast drop cam rotates to retract the pawl one tooth and advance the pawl with a snap action until the pawl abuts a stop member, at which time the retaining pawl engages the same tooth to hold the cam in place. At certain intervals or positions on the outer ratchet the teeth are missing thereby allowing the drive pawl (and then the retaining pawl) to ''''reach inside'''' and engage a time delay ratchet which is then advanced inside the outer ratchet a number of steps until the inner ratchet engages the inside of the outer ratchet and starts driving the outer ratchet until the drive pawl and retaining pawl are back onto the outside ratchet, at which time the inside ratchet is released and returned to its original point by the spring bias. This allows what would normally be a short interval on the outer ratchet to be ''''stretched'''' to provide a long interval without consuming too many steps of the timing cam.

Abstract: The timer has switches including upper and lower passive blades and an active blade therebetween. The distal end of the lower passive blade has depending spacers which straddle the cam upon which the follower on the distal end of the active blade rides. The spacers reference the lower passive blade off the hub of the drum type program cam. The lower passive blade is provided with a rest or stop for the upper passive blade limiting downward movement of that blade. With precision molding, both passive blades are accurately referenced from the cam hub and the location of the follower which actuates the active blade is precisely located. Accuracy of switching is increased without increased precision in manufacture. Use of two cam tracks permits simultaneous actuation of the active and ''''passive'''' blades to effect faster switching. It is possible to provide a ''''makemake'''' arrangement instead of the double throw arrangement.

Abstract: The continuously driven drive disc carries a drive pawl and a retracting lever on the same pivot. The pawl is biased against the lever by a compressed spring. The lever is held in retractive position by a tension spring. The lever includes a cam which engages a tab (projecting from the timer end plate) to move the lever to an inactive position against the bias of the tension spring while the drive pawl is restrained from following by reason of engagement of a depending finger with a second tab. Continued rotation of the disc clears the finger from the second tab allowing the compressed spring to drive the pawl into engagement with the internal teeth on the timer cam drum thus driving the drum until the lever clears its tab and is retracted by the second (tension) spring. As the lever is retracted it picks up the pawl and retracts the pawl and the drive step is completed. The drive is more economical than the usual stored energy step drive but is more expensive than a creep-type drive. It makes possible variations in steps (degrees and frequency) and even continuous (rapid) drive.

Abstract: The motor subassembly is mounted in the housing with the motor leads dressed between the motor case and the housing and connected to the motor terminal and to a switch blade terminal and does not require grounding. The gear case somewhat divides the motor case to retain the coil while the motor case cover cooperates with the gear case to enclose and journal the gearing with the drive pinion projecting therebetween to drive the gear on the perimeter of the timing cam. The timing cam is journaled on the bushing extruded from the motor cover and in the aperture in the housing cover with the gear cluster extension projecting into and visible in the cam hub to afford visual verification of motor operation. The three switch blades are accurately located in the housing by tabs engaging locating cavities and the pivoted yoke has pads which space the two outside blades from each other. During the time between defrost cycles the No. 1 blade rides on the cam with the No. 2 blade engaging the No. 1 blade. When the No. 1 blade drops off the cam drop, the No. 3 blade engages the No. 2 blade and remains so engaged until the No. 2 blade drops off the cam. The tangential distance between the ends of blades No. 1 and No. 2 determines the duration of the cycle in combination with the rotational speed of the cam. All components are trapped by the assembly of the cover to the housing which is accomplished without fasteners. The great reduction in parts while completely enclosing the product results in a quiet, low cost, accurate timer which is easily serviced in the field by way of easy verification of operation.
