Abstract: Metal oxides difficult to reduce are reduced in a rotating furnace heated by a short flame having a temperature of at least 1,900* C. produced by converting a gaseous hydrocarbon into carbon monoxide and hydrogen by partial combustion with oxygen at about 1,250* C. The carbon monoxide and hydrogen are burned in a furnace in a jet of oxygen directed toward the top of the furnace at about 1,900* C. producing carbon dioxide and water with release of heat.
