Abstract: An energy storage system (ESS) deflagration and thermal propagation mitigation method and corresponding systems prevent and, if necessary, suppress fires in ESS containers. The method uses a gas detection system, a smoke and temperature detection system, and a fire suppression system. The gas detection system opens a vent in response to detecting a concentration of gas that meets or exceeds a threshold concentration. If needed after venting the container, the smoke and temperature detection system closes the vent and activates the fire suppression system in response to detecting both the presence of smoke and a temperature that meets or exceeds a threshold temperature.
