Abstract: A personal audio device includes a sidetone circuit with one or more adjustable coefficients that generates a sidetone signal from the output of a first microphone. The sidetone circuit has one or more adjustable coefficients for altering the relationship between the first microphone signal and the sidetone signal. The personal audio device also includes a transducer for reproducing playback audio and the sidetone signal at an ear of a listener and a second microphone for measuring the output of the transducer as delivered to the ear of the listener. The sidetone circuit includes a calibration circuit for estimating a response of the second microphone to the sidetone signal and adjusting the coefficient of the sidetone circuit according to the estimated response.

Abstract: A headphone earbud may include a sensor to determine characteristics of an environment around the headphone earbud. The sensor may be integrated with the headphone earbud to measure a distance from the headphone earbud to a user's ear drum. This distance may be used to control an audio output of the headphone earbud, such as through an adaptive noise cancellation (ANC) algorithm. Control over the audio output may be performed by an audio integrated circuit (IC) integrated within the headphone earbud or within a mobile device coupled to the headphone earbud.

Abstract: An optical sensor may be integrated into headphones and feedback from the sensor used to adjust an audio output from the headphones. For example, an emergency vehicle traffic preemption signal may be detected by the optical sensor. Optical signals may be processed in a pattern discriminator, which may be integrated with an audio controller integrated circuit (IC). When the signal is detected, the playback of music through the headphones may be muted and/or a noise cancellation function turned off. The optical sensor may be integrated in a music player, a smart phone, a tablet, a cord-mounted module, or the earpieces of the headphones.
